As an Aesthetic Nurse, you combine clinical nursing expertise with specialist knowledge of cosmetic and skin treatments to deliver procedures such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, skin boosters, and chemical peels in private medical aesthetics clinics or medspas. You assess each client's suitability for treatment, take a full medical history, obtain informed consent, and carry out procedures safely in line with clinical protocols. You work closely with medical directors, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and fellow aesthetic practitioners to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes. Aftercare advice, complication management, and maintaining detailed clinical records are all central to the role.
Listen: a day as an Aesthetic Nurse
You arrive at the private aesthetics clinic in Dublin at half eight, thirty minutes before your first client. You check yesterday's notes on the practice management software, restock your treatment trolley with cannulas, syringes, hyaluronidase — the enzyme used to dissolve filler in an emergency — and verify that your emergency anaphylaxis kit is within date. The medical director, a GP who oversees the clinic, does a brief handover with you about two clients whose review photographs need to be discussed at today's end-of-day debrief. Your nine o'clock is a new client seeking anti-wrinkle injections. You take a thorough medical history using the clinic's standardised consultation form, asking about medications, autoimmune conditions, pregnancy, and previous reactions. You explain the procedure, realistic outcomes, and potential complications clearly, then obtain written informed consent before anything else happens. This takes the guts of forty minutes; you never rush it.
You must first qualify as a registered nurse in Ireland, which requires an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) through the CAO — offered at UCD, TCD, UCC, University of Galway, DCU, UL, and ATU among others. Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is mandatory before you can practise. After gaining clinical nursing experience (typically two or more years), you then undertake postgraduate training in aesthetic medicine, such as a Postgraduate Diploma or Masters (NFQ Level 9) in Aesthetic Nursing or Aesthetic Medicine, offered by providers including RCSI, TCD, and various private aesthetics academies recognised in Ireland. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics at Higher Level strengthen your nursing application and CAO points. Continuing professional development in advanced injectables, laser safety, and dermal science is expected throughout your career.
Most aesthetic nurses begin their careers in general or specialist hospital nursing, building core clinical skills before transitioning into aesthetics. After completing postgraduate aesthetic training and accumulating hands-on experience, you may progress to a lead or senior aesthetic nurse role within an established clinic. With experience, some aesthetic nurses open their own private practice or medispa, while others move into training and education roles, teaching injectable techniques to fellow clinicians. A small number progress into aesthetic medicine consultancy or medical-device liaison positions.
AI-powered skin analysis tools are increasingly used in aesthetic clinics to assess skin ageing, pigmentation, and treatment response, supporting but not replacing the aesthetic nurse's clinical judgement. Treatment planning software and digital imaging systems help nurses visualise outcomes and track client progress over time. Administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, consent documentation, and client follow-up are being streamlined through AI-assisted clinic management platforms. The hands-on, highly personalised nature of injectable treatments means that the core clinical role remains firmly human-centred.
