What does an Athletic Therapist do?

As an Athletic Therapist you assess, prevent, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries sustained in sport and physical activity. Your day-to-day work involves designing and supervising personalised rehabilitation programmes, applying manual therapy techniques, and using modalities such as taping, electrotherapy, and exercise prescription to return athletes to full fitness. You collaborate closely with physiotherapists, doctors, strength and conditioning coaches, and team management to ensure a coordinated approach to player welfare. Athletic Therapists work across professional and amateur sports clubs, private clinics, gyms, and community health settings throughout Ireland.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Athletic Therapist

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the sports facility at half seven in the morning, well before the squad reaches the training ground. You check your appointment book, restock the treatment table with fresh couch roll, and review the injury log you maintain on a shared spreadsheet with the team doctor and strength and conditioning coach. Two players flagged muscle tightness after yesterday's session, so you want to assess them before the warm-up begins. By eight o'clock the first athlete is on your table. You carry out a subjective assessment, asking where exactly the pain is, when it started, and what aggravates it. You follow this with objective tests, checking range of motion, palpating the muscle belly, and running a few resisted movements. You decide the hamstring strain is minor and apply kinesiology tape to support the area and reduce discomfort during training.

Required Education

A strong Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Biology, Physical Education, and Chemistry is advantageous for entry to relevant degree programmes. The primary route into Athletic Therapy in Ireland is an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Athletic Therapy and Training, offered at institutions such as TU Dublin and IT Carlow (now SETU). Some graduates choose to complement their qualification with a postgraduate diploma or master's at NFQ Level 9 to specialise in areas such as sports rehabilitation or strength and conditioning. Athletic Therapy is not yet regulated under CORU, but graduates are strongly encouraged to obtain membership and certification through the Athletic Therapists Association of Ireland (ATAI) or the Society of Sports Therapists (SST), which require a recognised degree and completion of a supervised clinical placement. A PLC course in Sport and Exercise at NFQ Level 5 or 6 can serve as a foundation pathway for students who do not meet direct entry requirements for a Level 8 programme.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Athletic Therapists begin their careers working on placement or in voluntary roles with GAA clubs, rugby clubs, or athletics associations while completing their degree, often securing paid positions with amateur or semi-professional clubs shortly after graduation. Entry-level roles typically involve working as a junior therapist in a private clinic or as an assistant therapist with a county-level sports team. With several years of experience, you may progress to a senior or lead therapist role within a professional sports organisation such as an SSE Airtricity League club, an IRFU provincial team, or a high-performance GAA county panel. Further progression can lead into sports science management, clinic ownership, or academic and teaching roles if you complete a postgraduate qualification.

AI Impact on the job

AI-driven movement analysis tools and wearable technology are increasingly used in athletic therapy to monitor athlete workloads, flag injury risk patterns, and track rehabilitation progress in real time, making data literacy a growing requirement for practitioners. Automated video gait analysis and machine-learning platforms can assist in identifying biomechanical inefficiencies that might be missed by the naked eye, supporting more precise programme design. However, the hands-on clinical assessment, manual therapy, and therapeutic relationship at the heart of Athletic Therapy cannot be replicated by AI, ensuring the human element of the profession remains central. Athletic Therapists who embrace these digital tools will be better positioned to work within high-performance environments that demand evidence-based, data-informed practice.
