What does a Doorperson do?

As a Doorperson you are the first point of contact for guests arriving at hotels, nightclubs, restaurants, or event venues, setting the tone for their entire visit. You greet guests warmly, manage entry to the premises, monitor who enters and exits, and ensure the safety and security of both guests and staff. In nightclub and venue settings you may check identification, refuse entry where necessary, and handle situations involving disorderly behaviour calmly and professionally. You work closely with venue managers, security teams, concierge staff, and bar or front-of-house personnel. In hotel environments you may also assist guests with luggage, direct them to facilities, and arrange or park vehicles.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Doorperson

0:00 / 0:00

Your shift at a busy Dublin city-centre hotel starts at 4 p.m. You clock in, sign the handover log from the day team, and pull on your uniform — pressed jacket, name badge, earpiece connected to the front-of-house radio channel. The duty manager briefs you on the evening: a corporate dinner for eighty guests in the function suite, a wedding party checking out after a late breakfast, and a sold-out comedy night in the adjoining venue. You take your position at the main entrance before the first taxis begin arriving. For the next two hours you are constantly moving. You open doors, greet guests by name where the reservation list allows, help an elderly couple carry luggage to the lobby, and radio the concierge to arrange a taxi for a guest who has missed their pre-booked one. It feels good when someone thanks you, but you are also keeping a quiet eye on everything — who is lingering near the entrance, whether any group looks like they have already had too much to drink before arriving.

Required Education

There are no strict Leaving Certificate subject requirements to become a Doorperson, though English and Communications are useful for customer-facing roles. Entry is typically at NFQ Level 4–5, and many Doorpersons begin with on-the-job training or a short QQI award in Security or Hospitality. Anyone working as door security staff at licensed premises such as nightclubs or event venues in Ireland must hold a valid licence from the Private Security Authority (PSA); to obtain this licence you must complete an approved training course, typically a QQI Level 4 Award in Door Security Skills. Some candidates also complete a QQI Level 5 Major Award in Security Operations through a PLC course at a College of Further Education. First Aid certification, such as Occupational First Aid through the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC), is strongly recommended and is often required by employers.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Doorpersons begin working part-time at local venues while completing their PSA licence, gaining experience across different types of premises such as hotels, nightclubs, and concert venues. With experience you may progress to a Senior Door Supervisor or Head of Door Security role, overseeing a team of door staff at a large venue or across multiple sites. Some experienced Doorpersons move into broader security management, event security coordination, or concierge roles in upmarket hotels. Others use the interpersonal and operational skills gained to move into hospitality management, loss prevention, or private security contracting.

AI Impact on the job

AI has a limited direct impact on the core duties of a Doorperson, as the role depends heavily on human judgement, physical presence, and interpersonal skills that cannot be replicated by technology. Some venues are beginning to use AI-assisted CCTV systems and facial recognition tools to support security monitoring, which may complement rather than replace door staff. Digital ID verification apps are increasingly used alongside traditional checks, making basic technology literacy a useful skill. Overall, the hands-on, people-facing nature of the role means it is unlikely to be significantly displaced by automation in the near future.
