As a Driving Instructor you teach learner drivers the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to drive safely on Irish roads. You deliver both in-car practical lessons and guidance on the rules of the road, preparing students for the RSA theory test and the practical driving test. You work with a wide range of learners — teenagers taking their first lessons, adults returning to driving, and professional drivers seeking licences for buses or coaches. You may be self-employed and run your own schedule, or work as part of a driving school, and you keep your own vehicle roadworthy and properly equipped at all times.
Listen: a day as a Driving Instructor
You start at half seven, checking your dual-control car before your first lesson. You walk around the vehicle, confirming the tyres, mirrors, brake pedal response, and the instructor's auxiliary brake on the passenger side. Your appointment book — kept in a simple scheduling app on your phone — shows six lessons today, the first at eight o'clock in a quiet housing estate on the edge of town. Your eight o'clock student is a seventeen-year-old on her third lesson. She holds a learner permit issued after passing the RSA theory test, which means she is legally allowed to drive only when accompanied by a qualified driver. You begin in a car park, running through the cockpit drill — seat, mirrors, seatbelt, controls — before moving onto residential roads. Progress is slow today; she stalls twice at a roundabout and gets flustered, so you talk her through it calmly and repeat the manoeuvre until her confidence steadies.
There is no specific Leaving Certificate subject requirement to become a driving instructor, though good communication skills and a solid understanding of road safety help. To become an RSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you must hold a full Irish driving licence for at least three years, pass a series of RSA exams covering theory, rules of the road, and instructional ability, and then register with the Road Safety Authority. For instructors teaching bus or coach driving (Category D), additional licences and CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) qualifications are required. Many driving instructors complete QQI Level 5 or 6 courses in training and education to strengthen their instructional skills. Continuous professional development is expected to maintain ADI registration.
Most driving instructors begin by obtaining their full Irish driving licence, completing the RSA ADI qualification process, and taking on learner car drivers. With experience, some instructors specialise in higher-category licences such as trucks (Category C) or buses and coaches (Category D), which command higher fees and serve professional transport employers. Others build their own driving school brand, taking on additional instructors and expanding their client base across a locality. Experienced ADIs may also move into roles as examiner trainers, fleet safety trainers for large organisations, or road safety education officers.
AI-powered driving simulators and hazard perception training tools are increasingly used as supplements to in-car instruction, particularly for the theory and pre-driving phases of learning. Some driving schools use scheduling software and AI-based learner management platforms to track student progress and book lessons more efficiently. However, the core practical teaching role — sitting beside a learner in a moving vehicle and providing real-time guidance — cannot be replicated by AI and remains firmly human-led. Driving instructors who embrace digital tools for administration and theory support will be better placed to run efficient, competitive practices.
