What does an Employment Integration Consultant do?

As an Employment Integration Consultant you support unemployed people, career changers, refugees, and individuals with disabilities in finding suitable work or vocational training. Your daily work involves meeting clients one-to-one to assess their skills, employment history, and personal circumstances, then helping them write CVs, draft cover letters, and prepare for job interviews. You liaise with employers, Intreo offices, SOLAS-funded programmes, and community organisations to connect clients with realistic job opportunities or upskilling pathways. You maintain accurate case records, observe strict confidentiality, and may work with interpreters or specialist support workers when assisting clients from diverse backgrounds. Depending on your employer, you may work in a public employment service, a not-for-profit integration body, or a private outplacement firm.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Employment Integration Consultant

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the community employment resource centre at half eight, make a quick coffee, and open your case management system to review today's appointments. You have six one-to-one client sessions booked, a phone call with your local Intreo office, and a visit to a hotel on the outskirts of town that is looking to recruit kitchen porters. Before the day gets busy, you check your emails and flag two new referrals from the International Protection Accommodation Service that will need interpreter bookings before any meeting can go ahead. Your first client arrives at nine. She is a Polish woman in her forties who has been out of the workforce for three years caring for a family member. You go through her employment history carefully, noting qualifications from Poland that may need to be assessed for recognition here. Together you update her CV and talk through how to address the employment gap honestly in a cover letter. The session takes the full hour.

Required Education

A Level 7 or Level 8 degree in a relevant discipline such as Social Care, Community Development, Human Resource Management, Psychology, or Guidance Counselling provides the most common entry route; courses are offered at TU Dublin, ATU, SETU, and other technological universities. A QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC award in Community Development, Social Care, or Adult Guidance can provide entry to degree programmes or, in some services, direct employment in a support worker role. Subjects such as Business, Geography, Languages, and LCVP are useful at Leaving Certificate level, demonstrating awareness of the world of work and communication skills. A postgraduate qualification in Career Guidance or Adult and Community Education (NFQ Level 9) is an advantage for progression to senior advisory or management positions. No statutory registration body currently governs this role in Ireland, though practitioners working in guidance settings may align with the Institute of Guidance Counsellors (IGC) as a professional reference point. Continuing professional development through SOLAS-funded training or Springboard+ programmes is common in this sector.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many people enter this field through roles such as employment support worker, job coach, or community development worker in an Intreo centre, ETB, or NGO setting, often with a Level 7 degree. With experience and a postgraduate qualification in career guidance or adult education, progression to senior consultant or case manager positions becomes achievable. Further advancement can lead to team leader, programme coordinator, or regional manager roles within organisations such as the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, Employability Ireland, or SOLAS-contracted service providers. Some experienced practitioners move into policy, training design, or independent outplacement consulting for private sector clients.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered tools are increasingly used to match jobseekers to vacancies, generate draft CV suggestions, and analyse labour market trends, reducing some of the more administrative elements of this role. However, the core of employment integration work — building trust with vulnerable clients, understanding personal circumstances, and providing empathetic, culturally sensitive guidance — cannot be replicated by automation. Consultants who develop competence in using AI-assisted platforms and online labour market intelligence tools will be better placed to serve clients effectively. The human relationship and advocacy dimensions of this role are expected to remain central, and may become even more valued as AI handles routine matching tasks.
