As a Finance Director you lead the entire finance function of an organisation, overseeing financial planning, reporting, budgeting, and treasury management at board level. You work closely with the CEO, other directors, and senior managers to shape financial strategy, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive commercial performance across the business. Your day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing management accounts, presenting financial forecasts to the board, managing audit relationships, and monitoring cash flow and liquidity. You also lead a team of accountants, financial analysts, and finance managers, setting direction and standards for the function. Finance Directors in Ireland are employed across a wide range of sectors including financial services, healthcare, technology, retail, and the public sector.
Listen: a day as a Finance Director
You arrive at the office shortly after 7:30 a.m., ahead of most of the team. Before the building fills up, you open your laptop and work through the overnight cash position report prepared by your treasury analyst. You check the company's bank balances across its main AIB and Bank of Ireland accounts, confirm that a large supplier payment cleared correctly, and flag a small discrepancy in one of the euro liquidity lines for follow-up. By 9:00 a.m. you are in a one-to-one with your Financial Controller to review the draft management accounts for the previous month. You query a variance in the cost-of-sales line, where actuals are running about four per cent above budget. You agree she will get the explanation from the operations manager and have revised commentary ready for the board pack by Thursday.
A strong Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, and Business is a natural starting point for this career. You would typically complete an Honours Bachelor degree (NFQ Level 8) in Accounting, Finance, or Business at a university such as UCD, TCD, UCC, DCU, University of Galway, or a technological university such as TU Dublin. Following graduation, most Finance Directors qualify as chartered accountants through a professional body such as Chartered Accountants Ireland (ACA), ACCA, or CIMA, which involves a training contract in practice or industry alongside professional examinations. A postgraduate qualification such as a Master's in Finance, Business, or an MBA (NFQ Level 9) is increasingly common and strengthens your candidacy for senior roles. Reaching Finance Director level typically requires ten or more years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, including time in senior management, before taking on full board responsibility.
Most Finance Directors begin their careers in an accountancy practice or in a graduate finance role within industry, qualifying as a chartered accountant with ACA, ACCA, or CIMA after several years. They then progress through roles such as Financial Accountant, Finance Manager, and Financial Controller, building expertise in reporting, planning, and team leadership over a decade or more. Many move between sectors — for example from Big Four practice to a technology multinational or financial services firm — to broaden their commercial experience before reaching director level. In larger organisations, a Finance Director may progress further to a Group CFO or CEO role, or move to non-executive board positions.
Artificial intelligence and advanced analytics tools are transforming routine financial tasks such as reporting, reconciliation, and forecasting, freeing Finance Directors to focus more on strategic analysis and decision-making. AI-powered platforms can process large volumes of financial data and surface insights far more quickly than traditional methods, raising expectations around the speed and depth of financial reporting. Finance Directors need to understand these technologies well enough to lead their adoption within the finance function and to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs. The human skills of judgement, stakeholder communication, and ethical oversight remain central to the role and are not readily replicated by automation.
