What does a Fisheries Adviser do?

As a Fisheries Adviser you provide expert guidance on the management, conservation and sustainable use of fish stocks in both inland and marine environments. Your daily work involves conducting surveys of fish populations and their habitats, analysing data on stock levels and water quality, and preparing reports and management plans for government agencies, fisheries bodies or private clients. You collaborate closely with scientists at the Marine Institute, rangers and ecologists at Inland Fisheries Ireland, environmental regulators such as the EPA, and local angling clubs or fishing communities. You may also advise fish hatcheries on best practice, contribute to environmental impact assessments, and ensure that fishing activities comply with national and EU fisheries legislation.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Fisheries Adviser

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:45 on a Tuesday morning in late September. You are based in the west of Ireland, working for Inland Fisheries Ireland, and today starts early because you have a salmon population survey scheduled on a river in County Galway. You pack your waders, electrofishing equipment and field data sheets into the IFI van and head out by 7:30, stopping briefly at a petrol station for coffee and a sandwich to eat on the road. You reach the survey site by 8:45 and meet two IFI rangers who will assist you. Electrofishing works by passing a controlled electrical current through the water, which temporarily stuns fish so they float to the surface where you can count, measure, weigh and record each individual before releasing it unharmed. It sounds dramatic, but it is a routine and carefully regulated method. You divide the river stretch into sections, work methodically upstream and record everything on waterproof field sheets. The water is cold and the riverbed uneven, so you concentrate hard to avoid slipping.

Required Education

A Leaving Certificate with strong results in Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Mathematics is the typical starting point for this career. Most Fisheries Advisers enter through an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Marine Biology, Freshwater Biology, Environmental Science, Zoology or Fisheries Science, available at institutions such as University of Galway, UCC, ATU and UCD. A Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor in Applied Freshwater and Marine Science or Environmental Biology can provide an entry route, though a Level 8 is increasingly expected by employers such as Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Marine Institute. Progression to specialist or senior advisory roles often requires a Level 9 Masters degree in Fisheries Management, Marine Science or a related discipline, and research-focused positions may require a PhD. No single statutory registration body governs fisheries advisers in Ireland, but membership of professional bodies such as the Institute of Fisheries Management or the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management is valued by employers.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many Fisheries Advisers begin their careers in graduate or technician roles with Inland Fisheries Ireland, the Marine Institute or environmental consultancies, carrying out field surveys and data collection under supervision. With experience and often a postgraduate qualification, you can progress to specialist advisory or project officer positions where you lead management plans or coordinate conservation programmes. Senior roles involve strategic policy development, programme leadership or team management within government agencies, research institutions or international bodies such as the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Some experienced advisers move into independent consultancy, providing services to developers, local authorities or conservation organisations across Ireland and internationally.

AI Impact on the job

AI and machine learning tools are increasingly being used to analyse large datasets from acoustic surveys, environmental DNA sampling and remote sensing, allowing Fisheries Advisers to detect stock changes and habitat degradation more rapidly and accurately than traditional methods alone. Automated image recognition can assist with fish identification and counting from underwater camera footage, reducing manual survey time. However, the core professional judgement required for habitat assessment, stakeholder engagement and policy advice remains firmly human, and advisers who can interpret AI-generated outputs critically will be most effective. Overall, AI is likely to enhance the efficiency and evidence base of fisheries advisory work rather than replace the profession.
