As a Fishing Vessel Skipper you take charge of a fishing vessel operating from an Irish port, overseeing all aspects of the voyage from departure to landing. You navigate inshore and coastal waters, read weather conditions, and decide when and where to fish in compliance with Irish and EU quota regulations. You manage and direct your crew, maintain safety standards on board, and operate fishing gear to locate, catch, and preserve fish or shellfish. You work closely with fish merchants, harbour masters, and Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) inspectors, ensuring catches are recorded and reported accurately.
Listen: a day as a Fishing Vessel Skipper
Your alarm goes off at 04:15 on a Tuesday morning in Killybegs, County Donegal. You pull on your waterproofs and head down to the pier while it is still dark. By 04:45 you are on board your twenty-metre demersal trawler, running through the pre-departure checklist: engine oil, fuel levels, bilge pumps, life rafts, and the emergency position-indicating radio beacon, known as an EPIRB. You check the Met Éireann marine forecast on the vessel's VHF radio and confirm a sea state of two to three metres, acceptable for today's trip west of Rathlin O'Birne. You cast off at 05:30 with a crew of three. As skipper, you take the wheel and plot a course using the chart plotter and GPS, while also keeping an eye on the radar as you clear the harbour mouth. Out at the fishing grounds, around three hours later, you study the echo sounder to locate a promising mark on the seabed before calling the crew to shoot the trawl net.
There is no specific Leaving Certificate subject requirement, though Maths, Geography, and Science are useful preparation. The primary route into this role is through BIM's certification system: you would typically complete a BIM Skipper's Certificate of Competency, progressing through Skipper Coastal and Skipper Unlimited grades depending on the waters you intend to fish. These are awarded at NFQ Level 5–6 through BIM's training programmes and are mandatory under Irish and EU maritime law for command of a registered fishing vessel. Practical sea time — often accumulated as a deckhand or crew member — is a compulsory component of the certification process. Further training in safety, first aid, and vessel management is also required, with courses available through BIM's National Fisheries College in Castletownbere and other maritime training centres.
Most people begin their career at sea as a general deckhand, gaining the required sea time and working towards their first BIM Certificate of Competency at Skipper Coastal level. With experience and further certification you can progress to Skipper Unlimited, allowing you to command larger vessels in more distant waters. Some experienced skippers go on to own their own vessel or fishing enterprise, while others move into roles with BIM as marine advisors, fisheries inspectors, or training instructors. There are also opportunities to diversify into aquaculture management or maritime safety consultancy.
AI-powered sonar systems and fish-finding technologies are increasingly assisting skippers in locating schools of fish more efficiently, reducing time and fuel spent searching. Automated weather routing tools and vessel monitoring systems provide real-time data that supports better decision-making at sea. However, the hands-on nature of vessel command — managing crew safety, responding to emergencies, and operating gear in unpredictable conditions — means that human judgement remains central to the role. AI is likely to act as a support tool rather than a replacement for the skipper's expertise and experience.
