As a Funds Accountant you calculate and verify the net asset value (NAV) of investment funds, ensuring that every asset and liability is accurately recorded on a daily or periodic basis. You prepare financial statements, reconcile cash and portfolio positions, and liaise with fund managers, custodians, and transfer agents to resolve discrepancies. Your working day involves reviewing accounting entries, checking compliance with regulatory and statutory obligations, and producing reports for investors and auditors. You typically work within a fund administration company or an asset management firm, most commonly based in Dublin's IFSC or in Wexford, which is a significant regional hub for fund administration. Attention to detail is critical, as errors in NAV calculations can have direct financial consequences for investors.
Listen: a day as a Funds Accountant
Your alarm goes off at 7:00 a.m. and you are at your desk in the IFSC by 8:15 a.m., logging into the fund accounting platform — most likely Geneva or InvestOne — before the European markets open fully. Your first task is to check overnight emails from custodian banks and transfer agents. Custodians hold the physical assets of the funds you service, and transfer agents process investor subscriptions and redemptions, so any unresolved queries from them need your attention immediately. By 9:00 a.m. you are deep into the NAV calculation for one of your assigned funds. NAV — net asset value — is essentially the total value of a fund's assets minus its liabilities, divided by the number of shares in issue. Every figure has to be right, because investors buy and sell units at this price. You pull in security prices from a pricing vendor, cross-check them against a secondary source, and flag anything that looks out of line for your senior accountant to review.

Careers in Accountancy in Ireland
CareersPortal
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline is the typical minimum requirement for an entry-level Funds Accountant role in Ireland. Relevant Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Mathematics, Accounting, Business, and Economics, ideally taken at Higher level. Many employers favour graduates who have completed or are pursuing a professional qualification such as ACCA, ACA (Chartered Accountants Ireland), or CIMA, which are pursued alongside work at NFQ Level 9. Some candidates enter through a Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor degree and progress by completing a professional accounting qualification. Graduates from technological universities such as TU Dublin, SETU, or ATU are well represented in the sector, alongside university graduates from UCD, UCC, and DCU. There is no statutory registration body for funds accountants, but professional membership of Chartered Accountants Ireland or ACCA is strongly valued by employers.
Most Funds Accountants begin as junior or associate fund accountants within a fund administration company, gaining hands-on experience with NAV calculations and reconciliations while studying towards a professional accounting qualification. After two to four years, progression to Senior Funds Accountant or Team Lead is common, with responsibility for supervising junior staff and managing client relationships. Further advancement can lead to roles such as Assistant Vice President, Manager, or Director within fund operations or fund accounting teams. Some experienced professionals move into related areas such as risk management, compliance, or fund controllership, or transfer their skills to asset management firms or investment banks.
AI and automation tools are increasingly handling routine data entry, cash reconciliation, and basic error-checking tasks within fund accounting, reducing manual workload for repetitive processes. This allows Funds Accountants to focus on exception handling, complex reconciliations, and value-added analysis rather than manual number-crunching. Machine learning models are also being deployed for fraud detection and anomaly identification within fund portfolios, complementing rather than replacing professional judgement. Funds Accountants who develop proficiency with these tools and maintain strong analytical and communication skills will remain highly employable as the role evolves.
