What does a Graphic Designer do?

Graphic Designers create visual concepts, layouts, and imagery to communicate ideas and messages across print and digital media. Your daily work involves producing designs for logos, advertisements, websites, packaging, social media content, magazines, and branded materials, using industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite. You work closely with clients, marketing teams, copywriters, photographers, and printers to ensure that visual content meets the brief, stays on budget, and is delivered on time. Attention to typography, colour, composition, and format is central to everything you produce. You may work in a design studio, an in-house creative department, an advertising agency, or as a freelancer.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Graphic Designer

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at the studio in Dublin 2 just before nine, make a coffee, and open your emails. There are three client messages waiting: one from a Cork-based food company querying the colour on a packaging proof, one from your account manager about a delayed print deadline, and one asking for minor text changes to a social media campaign. You note them all in your project management tool before the morning stand-up begins at half nine. The team stand-up lasts about fifteen minutes. Your creative director runs through the week's workload. You are leading on two live projects: a rebranded identity for a Galway credit union and a set of digital banner ads for an e-commerce client. You flag that the credit union logo still needs a sign-off before you can move to the stationery files.

Athlone Institute of Technology

Required Education

Leaving Certificate subjects such as Art, Design and Communication Graphics, and Technology are particularly useful, and a strong portfolio is often as important as points. The most common route is a Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Graphic Design or Visual Communication, offered at institutions such as NCAD, IADT, TU Dublin, and MTU Crawford College of Art and Design. Entry typically requires a portfolio submission and interview in addition to CAO points. A Level 5 or 6 PLC course in Graphic Design or Digital Media at a College of Further Education can serve as an alternative entry route, either into the workforce or as a pathway to a Level 7 or 8 degree via the Higher Education Links Scheme. There is no statutory registration body for graphic designers in Ireland, but membership of professional associations such as the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) supports career credibility. Postgraduate study at Level 9 is available for those wishing to specialise in areas such as UX design, branding, or design research.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many graphic designers begin their careers in junior or assistant roles within a studio, agency, or in-house creative team, building their portfolio and technical skills. With three to five years of experience, you can progress to a mid-level or senior designer role, taking on more complex projects and potentially mentoring junior colleagues. Some designers specialise over time in areas such as brand identity, UX/UI design, motion graphics, or packaging, which can open doors to more senior or better-paid positions. Others move into creative direction, freelance consultancy, or establish their own design studios.

AI Impact on the job

AI image-generation and design tools are changing how graphic designers work, automating some routine tasks such as resizing assets, generating initial visual concepts, or producing template-based layouts. However, strategic creative thinking, brand understanding, and the ability to interpret nuanced client briefs remain distinctly human strengths that AI cannot reliably replicate. Designers who learn to use AI tools effectively as part of their workflow are likely to become more productive and competitive. The profession is evolving rather than disappearing, with greater emphasis placed on creative direction, problem-solving, and the communication skills that underpin strong design work.
