As a Locker Room Attendant you maintain changing rooms and locker facilities at gyms, leisure centres, swimming pools, and sports clubs, ensuring these areas are clean, safe, and welcoming for members and visitors. Your daily tasks include allocating locker space, distributing and collecting keys or padlocks, mopping floors, replenishing toiletries, and keeping showers and changing areas hygienic. You are often the first point of contact for members in the changing area, handling queries, assisting with lost property, and reporting any maintenance issues to supervisors. You work alongside fitness instructors, reception staff, and facility managers in environments run by local authority leisure services, private gym chains such as Flyefit or Energie Fitness, hotel spas, and sports clubs.
Listen: a day as a Locker Room Attendant
Your alarm goes off at 6.15 a.m. You are working at a local authority leisure centre in Cork, operated by Cork City Council's recreation department. You need to be on site by 7.00 a.m., well before the facility opens to the public at 7.30 a.m. You collect your uniform from the staff room, sign in on the rota sheet, and grab the morning checklist from your supervisor. Your first job is a full walkthrough of both the male and female changing rooms. You check every shower cubicle, wipe down the benches with a disinfectant solution, mop the tiled floors, and restock the soap dispensers and paper towel units. Any broken fittings or a faulty locker latch get written up on a maintenance request form that goes to the facilities manager.
There are no formal minimum education requirements for this role, and most employers will consider candidates who have completed the Junior Cycle or are still in Senior Cycle. A Leaving Certificate is an advantage, and subjects such as Physical Education, Home Economics, or any subject that develops communication and organisational skills are helpful. On-the-job training is the standard route, covering health and safety, COSHH awareness for cleaning chemicals, and customer service procedures. A QQI Level 4 or Level 5 award in Sport and Recreation, Leisure Facility Operations, or Cleaning and Support Services from a College of Further Education would strengthen your application and prospects for advancement. No statutory professional registration is required for this role, though employers may expect a valid manual handling certificate and a Safe Pass card for certain facilities.
Most people enter this role on a part-time or casual basis while studying or seeking experience in the sport and fitness sector, gaining familiarity with facility operations from the ground up. With experience, you can progress to a Senior Attendant or Duty Supervisor role, taking on responsibility for rostering, staff training, and facility compliance checks. Completing a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award in Sport and Recreation or Leisure Facility Management opens doors to roles such as Facilities Coordinator or Recreation Assistant. From there, further study at Level 7 or Level 8 in Sports Management or Leisure Management can lead to managerial positions within local authority leisure services or private gym operators.
AI is unlikely to displace locker room attendants in the near future, as the role depends on physical presence, hands-on cleaning, and face-to-face customer interaction that automated systems cannot easily replicate. Smart locker technology and app-based booking systems are already being introduced in some facilities, reducing the administrative side of locker allocation but not the need for a staff presence. AI-assisted scheduling tools may help managers roster attendants more efficiently, altering shift patterns and workload distribution. Overall, technology is more likely to reshape certain tasks than to eliminate the role itself.
