What does a Marketing Assistant do?

As a Marketing Assistant you support the day-to-day running of marketing campaigns, helping to promote products, services or events on behalf of an employer or agency. Your work can include distributing leaflets and flyers in busy public areas or through residential letterboxes, maintaining a presence at promotional events, and supporting colleagues with social media posts and basic content creation. You liaise with members of the public, retail staff and campaign supervisors, representing the organisation in a professional and friendly manner. Much of the role involves outdoor and on-the-ground activity, so you need to be comfortable working in a range of weather conditions and across different geographic areas.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Marketing Assistant

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 7:15 on a Tuesday morning. Today your team is running a promotional push for a new broadband package in a busy retail park on the outskirts of Cork city. You check your phone for any messages from your campaign supervisor before getting ready and heading out the door by 8:00. You arrive at the campaign supervisor's van by 8:45. Together with two other marketing assistants, you load up a trolley with branded leaflets, a pop-up banner, and a small merchandise kit — pens, tote bags, and discount vouchers. Your supervisor runs through the briefing: your patch is the entrance to a large supermarket, and your goal is to hand out leaflets and speak to shoppers about the broadband deal. You are reminded to log every voucher distributed on a simple paper tally sheet.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.

Required Education

Entry to this role does not normally require a third-level degree; many Marketing Assistants begin with a Leaving Certificate and learn on the job, or complete a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC course in Marketing, Business or Communications at a College of Further Education. Subjects such as Business, English, Art, and Geography at Leaving Certificate level are all useful background preparation. A QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Marketing or a related discipline from a College of Further Education provides a strong foundation and can also serve as a stepping stone towards a Level 7 or Level 8 degree through CAO links or Springboard+ pathways. No statutory professional registration is required for this role, though experience can lead naturally into regulated marketing or communications roles over time.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most people begin as a Marketing Assistant in a part-time or entry-level capacity, often while studying or shortly after finishing the Leaving Certificate. With experience and further qualifications — such as a QQI Level 6 award or a Level 7/8 degree in Marketing or Business — you can progress to roles such as Marketing Co-ordinator or Junior Brand Executive. From there, career development typically leads toward Digital Marketing Executive, Campaign Manager or Account Executive positions in agencies or in-house marketing departments across Ireland. Completing professional development through bodies such as the Marketing Institute of Ireland can further strengthen your career prospects.

AI Impact on the job

AI tools are increasingly used to target leaflet distribution more precisely, using data analytics to identify the most effective geographic areas and demographics for a campaign. Automated scheduling software can optimise delivery routes, reducing time and costs for employers. However, the core physical and interpersonal elements of the role — handing out materials, engaging the public and representing a brand in person — cannot be replaced by AI, keeping human workers central to field marketing. Marketing Assistants who also develop skills in AI-assisted content creation and social media tools will be well placed as campaigns become more data-driven.
