What does a Motor Vehicle Parts Advisor do?

As a Motor Vehicle Parts Advisor you identify, source, and sell the correct parts and accessories for cars, vans, trucks, buses, and other vehicles in a franchised dealership or independent parts outlet. Your daily work involves advising trade customers such as mechanics and fleet operators, as well as members of the public, on which parts best suit their needs. You manage stock records, process deliveries, organise storage, handle shipping orders, and follow up with customers to ensure satisfaction. You work closely with workshop technicians, service managers, and suppliers, and you spend much of your time using electronic parts catalogues and dealership management systems.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Motor Vehicle Parts Advisor

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at half seven. You are due at the parts counter of a busy franchised dealership on the edge of a provincial town by eight o'clock. You change into your branded polo shirt and steel-toe boots, grab a coffee, and head in. Before the workshop opens, you log into the dealer management system — in many Irish franchised garages this is something like Kerridge or CDK — and check the overnight purchase orders. Three lines are on back-order from the main distributor in Dublin, which means you will need to phone an alternative supplier before the technicians start looking for those parts later in the morning. By half eight the workshop is busy. A Volkswagen technician comes to the counter needing a timing belt kit for a 2019 Tiguan. You open the electronic parts catalogue, cross-reference the engine code from the job card, confirm the correct kit number, and locate it on the shelf in bay four. You book it out against the job number and print a picking slip. This happens a dozen times before lunch, for everything from brake pads to wiper blades to a sensor you have never heard of before.

Required Education

There are no fixed Leaving Certificate subject requirements for this role, though subjects such as Mathematics, Engineering, and Business Studies are useful preparation. Most people enter at NFQ Level 5 through a QQI/FET award in Sales, Retail Practice, or Motor Industry Studies completed at a College of Further Education or ETB training centre. Some entrants join directly from school and receive on-the-job training, building product knowledge over time through manufacturer training programmes provided by brands such as Ford, Toyota, or Mercedes-Benz. SOLAS apprenticeships in the motor trade (for example, Heavy Vehicle Mechanic or Agricultural Mechanics) can also provide a strong technical grounding that complements a move into parts advising. No statutory professional registration is required for this role, but manufacturer accreditation programmes are widely valued by employers across Ireland.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Parts Advisors start at counter level, building knowledge of vehicle systems and supplier networks over their first few years. With experience, you can progress to Senior Parts Advisor or Parts Team Leader, taking on responsibility for ordering, pricing, and mentoring newer staff. Further progression can lead to Parts Manager, overseeing the full department budget, supplier relationships, and a small team. Ambitious individuals may move into regional parts or aftersales management roles with larger dealer groups operating across multiple Irish sites.

AI Impact on the job

AI-powered parts identification systems and predictive inventory tools are already being introduced by larger dealer groups and parts distributors, reducing time spent on manual catalogue searching. These tools can help you locate substitute parts more quickly and flag likely demand patterns for stock ordering, making the role more efficient rather than eliminating it. However, the human element of advising trade customers, resolving disputes, and managing supplier relationships remains important and is difficult to fully automate. Parts advisors who embrace digital tools and continue to build technical knowledge will find AI a practical aid rather than a threat to their employment.
