As a Nail Technician you provide a full range of nail care services, including manicures, pedicures, gel and acrylic nail applications, and creative nail art. You prepare and shape natural nails, remove cuticles, apply treatments, and use specialist products to achieve the finish a client wants. You advise clients on nail health, hand care, and the aftercare products best suited to their skin and nail type. Much of your day is spent working directly with clients in a salon, a beauty college, a hotel spa, or as a mobile technician visiting clients at home. Maintaining a clean, sterilised workstation and complying with Irish cosmetics and health and safety regulations is a central part of the role.
Listen: a day as a Nail Technician
Your alarm goes off at 8 a.m. and you are at the salon by 8.45, well before your first client arrives at nine. You unlock the supply cabinet, check that your autoclave — the sterilising unit used to kill bacteria on metal tools — has completed its cycle overnight, and lay out your workstation with fresh towels, nail files, buffers, cuticle pushers, and the gel polish colours your first client requested when she booked online. You also top up the foot spa with clean water and a measured capful of disinfectant solution, logging the preparation in the salon's daily hygiene record as required under Irish health and safety guidelines. Your first appointment is a gel manicure. You assess the client's nails, remove the old gel using acetone-soaked wraps, gently push back her cuticles, shape the free edge with a file, and apply a base coat, two layers of colour gel, and a top coat, curing each layer under a UV lamp for sixty seconds. You chat while you work, but you are also watching for any signs of nail lifting or skin irritation that might suggest an allergy, because your duty of care to the client does not stop at the cosmetic result.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
There are no mandatory Leaving Certificate subject requirements to become a Nail Technician, though subjects such as Art, Biology, and Home Economics are useful. The most common route is a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Beauty Therapy or a dedicated Nail Technology module, available through PLC courses in Colleges of Further Education (CFEs) run by Education and Training Boards (ETBs) across Ireland. Some providers also offer standalone short courses in gel nails, acrylics, and nail art at QQI Level 5. Completing a broader QQI Level 5 or Level 6 Beauty Therapy programme can widen your service offering and employability. There is no statutory registration body for nail technicians in Ireland, but membership of industry organisations such as the Irish Beauty Industry Association (IBIA) is professionally beneficial. Many technicians also build their skills through manufacturer training programmes run by brands such as OPI, CND, or Gelish.
Most Nail Technicians begin their careers as junior technicians or trainees in a salon, building speed and confidence across different services under the supervision of more experienced colleagues. With a solid client base and a strong portfolio — often developed through social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok — you can progress to a senior technician role, take on mentoring responsibilities, or manage a salon's nail department. Many experienced technicians in Ireland move into self-employment, renting a chair in a salon or operating as a mobile technician, which offers greater flexibility and earning potential. Further progression can include opening your own nail salon, running training workshops, or becoming a brand educator for a professional nail product company.
AI has a limited direct impact on the hands-on, tactile work of a Nail Technician, as the skill and artistry involved cannot currently be replicated by machines. However, AI tools are increasingly useful for business tasks such as automated appointment booking, client communication, and social media content creation. Design apps and AI image generators can help you visualise nail art concepts and present options to clients before starting a service. Overall, technology is more likely to enhance and streamline the business side of a nail technician's work than to replace the craft itself.
