What does a Shipping Agent do?

As a Shipping Agent you act as the key liaison between ship owners, cargo operators, port authorities and customs officials in Irish ports such as Dublin, Cork, Waterford and Foynes. You arrange the clearance of vessels, their crews and their cargo through customs and immigration, ensuring all documentation — including bills of lading, manifests and dangerous goods declarations — is accurate and submitted on time. Your daily work involves calculating duties and taxes on imported goods, managing import and export licences, and coordinating the movement of cargo to and from the port. You communicate constantly with freight forwarders, Revenue's Customs Division, the Port Authority and shipping line representatives to keep cargo moving efficiently and in full compliance with Irish and EU trade law.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Shipping Agent

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 06:30. A container vessel is due to berth at Dublin Port before 08:00, and you need to be at your desk well before it ties up. You pull up the port's vessel tracking system on your laptop at home, confirm the estimated time of arrival has not shifted overnight, then grab your bag and head in. By 07:15 you are at your agency's office near the port. You check your emails and find that Revenue's Customs Division has flagged one line on the cargo manifest — a consignment of electrical goods listed without the correct commodity code. You phone the freight forwarder in Cork, explain the issue and ask them to send a corrected entry through the Automated Entry Processing system, known as AEP, before the vessel is cleared.

Required Education

A Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Business, Mathematics and a language is a useful foundation for entering this field. Many entrants hold a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 award in Logistics, Freight Forwarding or a related area, available through PLC courses in Colleges of Further Education across Ireland. Some employers accept school leavers and provide on-the-job training, with staff working towards a Higher Certificate (NFQ Level 6) in Logistics and Supply Chain Management offered at institutes such as TU Dublin or ATU. A degree in Business, International Trade or Supply Chain Management at NFQ Level 7 or 8 can accelerate progression to more senior roles. Knowledge of Revenue's Automated Import and Export Systems (AIS/AES) and familiarity with the Irish Customs Trader Extranet are increasingly expected. No statutory registration body applies to shipping agents, though membership of the Irish International Freight Association (IIFA) is widely recognised in the industry.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Many shipping agents begin in a port or freight office as a documentation clerk or junior customs entry writer, learning the trade on the job while studying for a QQI Level 5 or 6 qualification. With two to four years of experience handling customs entries and vessel agency work, you can move into a senior agent or team leader role, managing a portfolio of shipping lines or import/export clients. Further progression can lead to operations manager or compliance manager positions within a freight forwarding company or port authority. Experienced agents with strong commercial skills sometimes move into trade consultancy, customs advisory services or roles with Revenue's Customs Division.

AI Impact on the job

AI and automation are already streamlining routine customs entry processing, with machine-learning tools now capable of suggesting tariff classifications and flagging compliance risks in cargo declarations. Revenue's own digital systems continue to evolve, reducing some of the manual data-entry work that junior agents traditionally handled. However, the judgement required to resolve complex compliance issues, communicate with port authorities during vessel turnarounds and manage unexpected cargo problems means that human expertise remains central to the role. Shipping agents who embrace digital customs platforms and data analytics tools will be better placed to add value as automation handles more of the routine documentation workload.
