What does a Visual Arts Teacher do?

As a Visual Arts Teacher you plan and deliver lessons in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and other visual art forms to students across Junior and Senior Cycle classes. You introduce students to art history, critical analysis, and a wide range of materials and techniques, helping each individual develop their own creative voice. You assess student portfolios, prepare learners for Leaving Certificate Visual Art examinations, and liaise with parents, the school principal, and colleagues about student progress. You maintain a safe and well-resourced art room, manage equipment and consumables, and may organise exhibitions, school art competitions, or trips to galleries such as the National Gallery of Ireland or IMMA.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as a Visual Arts Teacher

0:00 / 0:00

You arrive at school by half past eight, unlocking the art room and checking that the previous afternoon's acrylic paintings are dry enough to stack. Before the bell, you lay out palettes, brushes, and reference sheets for a Third Year class who are working on a still-life project for their Junior Cycle Portfolio. You also log into the school's online learning platform to upload feedback notes from last night's marking. Your first class, a mixed-ability First Year group, files in at nine. You begin with a ten-minute demonstration of line and tone using graphite pencils, then walk the room, crouching beside students to correct grip or encourage a quieter student who has stopped drawing entirely. Managing thirty teenagers with sharp pencils and wandering attention takes patience, and you remind two boys at the back to focus before gently redirecting the group.

Required Education

To teach Visual Arts at second level in Ireland you typically need an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Fine Art, Visual Art, or a related discipline, followed by a Professional Master of Education (PME) — also Level 9 — which includes supervised school placement. Some colleges, such as NCAD in partnership with UCD, offer concurrent four-year programmes that combine the subject degree with teaching qualification in a single award. At primary level you would complete a Bachelor of Education at an institution such as Marino Institute of Education, MIC, or Froebel Department at Maynooth, which includes arts methodology. Leaving Certificate subjects that strengthen your application include Art, Art History (where offered), English, and Irish. All qualified teachers must register with the Teaching Council and engage in ongoing Cosán professional learning.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most Visual Arts Teachers begin their careers on fixed-term or part-time contracts before securing a permanent position in an ETB, community, or voluntary secondary school. With experience, you may take on roles such as Year Head, Subject Coordinator, or Arts Department Head. Some teachers pursue further study at NFQ Level 9 or 10, moving into curriculum development with the NCCA, advisory roles with the Department of Education, or lecturing in teacher education colleges. Senior school leadership roles such as Deputy Principal or Principal are also possible pathways for those who build administrative and pastoral experience over time.

AI Impact on the job

AI image-generation tools are changing how students encounter and think about visual creativity, and Visual Arts Teachers are increasingly needed to help young people critically evaluate AI-produced work alongside traditional art forms. Administrative tasks such as report writing and resource sourcing may be partially assisted by AI, freeing more time for hands-on studio teaching. However, the deeply human dimensions of the role — mentoring individual creative development, facilitating tactile craft skills, and fostering emotional expression — cannot be replicated by AI. Teachers who incorporate digital and AI literacy into their practice will be well positioned to keep the curriculum relevant and engaging.
