Advanced Paramedic Practice

This programme builds on your existing paramedic registration to develop advanced clinical competencies in pre-hospital emergency medicine. You will study complex patient assessment, advanced airway management, pharmacological interventions, and critical care decision-making in high-pressure environments. Specialist modules cover cardiac emergencies, major trauma, paediatric emergencies, and clinical leadership. A typical week combines simulation-based learning in clinical labs, case-based tutorials, and supervised clinical practice hours on emergency services. Erasmus clinical placements or secondments with specialist retrieval teams may be available, and you will be expected to maintain a reflective practice portfolio throughout the programme.

Entry to this postgraduate programme requires you to hold a recognised paramedic qualification and current registration with PHECC (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council) at paramedic level. Applicants typically need an NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 degree in paramedicine or a cognate health science discipline. You will normally be required to demonstrate a minimum of two years of operational clinical practice post-registration before applying. Employers such as the HSE National Ambulance Service or Dublin Fire Brigade often sponsor candidates, and workplace evidence of clinical competency may form part of the selection process. Mature applicants with substantial pre-hospital experience but non-standard qualifications may be considered through a recognition of prior learning process.

Advanced Paramedics command higher salaries than standard paramedics, with gross annual earnings typically in the range of €50,000–€68,000 depending on seniority and service. The National Ambulance Service has faced persistent staffing shortages at advanced practice level, meaning graduates with PHECC Advanced Paramedic registration are generally well placed for employment. The role is also evolving, with Advanced Paramedics increasingly working in community and primary care settings as well as traditional emergency response.
