What will you learn?

A Data Science and Analytics degree teaches you to extract meaning from large, complex datasets using mathematics, statistics, and programming. You will study topics such as machine learning, data visualisation, statistical modelling, and database management, with a strong emphasis on applying these skills to real-world problems across sectors like finance, healthcare, and tech. Typical weeks combine lectures in probability and algorithms with hands-on lab sessions in Python or R, and group project work on live datasets. Most programmes include a structured work placement — often with Dublin-based tech multinationals or financial services firms — giving you valuable industry experience before you graduate. Some programmes also offer Erasmus exchange opportunities in Europe.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO, and most programmes require a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including at least two at Higher level. Higher Level Mathematics is typically required or strongly preferred, and a good grade in it is important given the mathematical demands of the course. CAO points for Data Science and Analytics programmes are generally in the moderate-to-high range, reflecting strong demand. If you do not meet the direct entry requirements, a Level 5 or Level 6 QQI award in Computing, Science, or a related area can provide a progression route into the first or second year of a degree. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student route, and applicants with disabilities or from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds may be eligible under the DARE or HEAR access schemes respectively.

Career Prospects

The outlook for data science graduates in Ireland is very strong, with demand consistently outpacing supply across most sectors. Entry-level salaries for data analysts typically range from around €35,000 to €45,000 gross per year, with experienced data scientists earning €60,000 to €90,000 or more depending on sector and specialism. Ireland's position as a European hub for technology and financial services multinationals means a wide range of graduate roles are available, particularly in Dublin and Cork. The broad applicability of data skills means graduates also have good mobility across industries.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are central to the curriculum itself, meaning you will both study AI tools and use them throughout your degree. In the workplace, AI-powered platforms are automating routine data processing tasks, which shifts the focus of the analyst role towards interpretation, communication, and strategic insight. Rather than reducing demand for graduates, AI is expanding the field by generating new roles in model development, AI governance, and data ethics. Staying current with emerging tools and frameworks will be an ongoing professional requirement throughout your career.
