A BSc (Hons) in Environmental Health covers the science and law behind protecting public health from environmental hazards. You study food safety legislation and inspection, water quality, housing standards, communicable disease control, and occupational health. Practical placements with the HSE Environmental Health Service are a central feature, giving you hands-on experience conducting inspections and investigating complaints. A typical week might include lectures in environmental science or health law, laboratory sessions analysing food or water samples, and tutorial work on case studies drawn from real enforcement scenarios. The programme prepares you for a highly regulated professional career in statutory public health protection.
Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of six subjects including English, Mathematics, and a science subject such as Biology, Chemistry, or Agricultural Science. Higher-level grades are expected in at least two or three subjects, and CAO points for this programme are generally moderate to high given the limited number of places available. Subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Home Economics are particularly useful preparation. QQI Level 5 or 6 applicants with relevant FET awards in Environmental Science, Health Science, or a related area may apply through the QQI/FET progression route. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student pathway, and HEAR and DARE schemes are available for eligible applicants.
Demand for qualified Environmental Health Officers in Ireland is consistent, underpinned by statutory requirements for HSE inspections and growing regulatory oversight of food and environmental standards. Graduates who complete the professional competency assessment and register with the Environmental Health Officers Association (EHOA) are in a strong position to secure HSE roles. Salary for an entry-level EHO in the HSE typically falls in the range of €34,000–€42,000 gross per annum, rising with experience and seniority. Opportunities in the private food and hospitality sector offer additional variety and in some cases higher remuneration.
AI and data analytics tools are beginning to assist Environmental Health Officers in risk-scoring food businesses and prioritising inspection schedules, reducing reliance on purely routine timetabling. Remote sensing and environmental monitoring technologies are increasingly used in water and air quality surveillance, complementing fieldwork. However, the legally authorised inspection, enforcement, and prosecution functions of EHOs require in-person professional judgement and cannot be automated. Overall, AI is likely to support rather than replace environmental health practice in Ireland.

How to apply
The primary route is through the CAO (cao.ie), with applications submitted by 1 February each year for undergraduate entry. Environmental Health is a specialist field with very limited providers in Ireland; TU Dublin is the main CAO-listed provider, and applicants should check individual institution websites for any direct or mature-entry routes.
