What will you learn?

This QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate equips you with the practical and managerial skills needed to supervise teams and operations across hotels, restaurants, catering facilities, and conference venues. You study food and beverage service, accommodation management, kitchen operations, and the financial side of running a hospitality business, including costing, budgeting, and function planning. A significant portion of your week involves hands-on practical sessions in training kitchens, restaurant areas, and front-office environments, giving you real experience of supervisory decision-making. Work placement in a local hotel or catering operation is a core component, and many programmes build in structured industry days with local employers. You graduate with both operational expertise and the supervisory confidence to lead a shift or a small team.

Required Education

Entry to this programme typically requires a Leaving Certificate, with passes in a minimum of five subjects including English; Leaving Certificate Applied may also be accepted by some colleges. Subjects such as Home Economics, Business, and Mathematics are useful preparation, though not always formally required. Many Colleges of Further Education also accept applicants on the basis of relevant work experience in hospitality, making this an accessible route for adults returning to education. QQI Level 5 awards in Hospitality, Catering, or Tourism provide a strong progression route onto this Level 6 programme. Mature applicants are welcome and are assessed on life and work experience; HEAR and DARE supports may be available depending on the college. No CAO points are involved as places are allocated directly by the college.

Career Prospects

Ireland's hospitality sector continues to employ large numbers of people, and there is consistent demand for supervisors with both practical skills and business knowledge. Graduates with a QQI Level 6 qualification tend to progress more quickly into team leader and junior management positions than those without a formal qualification. Salary at supervisory level typically ranges from around €28,000 to €38,000 gross per annum, with senior roles in larger hotels or contract catering organisations earning more. The sector can be competitive in urban areas but opportunities remain strong nationally, particularly outside Dublin.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is beginning to influence hospitality operations through automated booking systems, revenue management software, and AI-driven customer communication tools such as chatbots. As a supervisor, you will increasingly work alongside these technologies rather than be replaced by them, using data dashboards to manage rosters, track occupancy, and control costs. Core supervisory skills such as team leadership, guest relations, and on-the-spot problem solving remain distinctly human and are not easily automated. Familiarity with property management systems and digital tools will become an increasingly important part of the role.
