What will you learn?

This two-year apprenticeship places you at the heart of real software development from day one. You split your time between working with a tech employer and attending off-the-job training delivered through TU Dublin in partnership with FIT. During the programme you develop practical skills in programming, software testing, database management and agile project delivery. A typical week might involve writing and reviewing code with your workplace team, attending online or blended learning sessions, and completing assignments tied directly to your on-the-job experience. You graduate with hands-on commercial experience and a nationally recognised QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in IT.

Required Education

Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of five passes, including English and Maths, though employers often prefer Higher-level Maths or at least Ordinary-level Maths at a strong grade given the technical nature of the work. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Computer Science, Physics, or Applied Maths are advantageous but not always mandatory. Because this is an apprenticeship, you must secure a registered employer place before enrolling; FIT and Generation Apprenticeship publish employer listings to help you find a suitable match. QQI Level 5 Computing or IT graduates can also apply, making this an accessible route for those coming through PLC colleges. Mature applicants over 23 may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience, and HEAR and DARE supports may apply to the off-the-job training component delivered through TU Dublin.

Career Prospects

Demand for software development skills in Ireland remains consistently strong, with the ICT sector continuing to grow despite periodic fluctuations in multinational hiring. Graduates of this apprenticeship enter the workforce with verified commercial experience, which gives them a clear advantage over candidates with academic qualifications alone. Starting salaries for junior software developers in Ireland typically range from approximately €28,000 to €38,000 gross per year, with significant progression potential as skills develop. The earn-and-learn model also means you graduate debt-free and with savings, a practical financial advantage over traditional higher education routes.

Impact of AI on this program

AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot and AI-powered testing frameworks are already part of everyday software development practice, and you will encounter these tools throughout your apprenticeship. Rather than replacing junior developers, AI is reshaping the role — emphasising skills like code review, prompt engineering, debugging AI-generated output, and understanding software architecture. The curriculum is evolving to ensure apprentices can work confidently alongside these tools rather than being displaced by them. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication with non-technical colleagues remain skills that AI cannot replicate and that employers consistently value.
