What will you learn?

Marine Engineering at the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI), part of Munster Technological University, prepares you to operate, maintain and repair the propulsion systems, boilers, electrical plant and auxiliary machinery found aboard commercial vessels. You study thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, marine electrical systems and naval architecture alongside hands-on workshops in the NMCI's engine-room simulators and training facilities. A defining feature of the programme is mandatory sea time — periods spent aboard merchant vessels as a cadet, counting towards your officer of the watch certification. In a typical week you might attend lectures on diesel engine theory, complete practical fault-finding exercises in the simulator, and log hours in the engineering workshop. The programme prepares you to sit examinations set by the Department of Transport and the Irish Maritime Administration (IMA) towards your Class 4 Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate including at least six subjects, with English or Irish and Mathematics essential; Higher-level Mathematics and Physics or Engineering are strongly advantageous and often required at competitive grades. CAO points for this programme are moderate but the cohort is small, so competition can be significant. A good standard of physical fitness and an eyesight assessment are required, as you will undertake sea service. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in Engineering or a related discipline can provide a progression route for applicants who do not meet Leaving Certificate requirements directly. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student CAO pathway, and HEAR and DARE schemes are available for eligible applicants from socioeconomic or disability backgrounds.

Career Prospects

Demand for qualified marine engineer officers remains strong internationally, and Irish graduates are well regarded in global shipping markets. The shift towards liquefied natural gas propulsion and offshore renewable energy infrastructure is creating additional specialist roles for engineers with maritime training. Starting salaries for junior officers at sea are competitive relative to shore-based engineering roles, with significant earning potential as you gain certificates of competency. The global nature of the career means opportunities are not limited to Ireland, giving graduates considerable flexibility.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and advanced data analytics are increasingly being used in predictive maintenance systems aboard modern vessels, helping engineers identify faults in engines and auxiliary plant before failures occur. Automation is gradually reducing crew sizes on some ship types, meaning marine engineers need to be comfortable working with sophisticated computerised monitoring and control systems. However, the hands-on, safety-critical nature of maintaining propulsion machinery at sea means that qualified engineers cannot be replaced by AI, and human oversight remains a regulatory requirement. Understanding these digital tools will become an increasingly important part of the role.

How to apply

Most undergraduate Marine Engineering programmes in Ireland are applied for through the CAO (cao.ie) with a closing date typically in February each year. The National Maritime College of Ireland, operated under MTU, is the primary specialist provider and may have additional fitness-to-sea or medical requirements alongside CAO points.
