Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering blends mechanical engineering, electronics, control systems and software into one integrated programme. You will study how intelligent machines are designed, built and programmed — from industrial robots and automated production lines to medical devices and autonomous vehicles. Practical laboratory sessions are central to every year, and you will work with real robotic platforms, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and embedded systems. Most programmes include a structured work placement, typically in Ireland's strong manufacturing, med-tech or automation sectors, giving you industry experience before you graduate. A typical week mixes lectures in dynamics or control theory, hands-on lab sessions building and testing circuits or robotic prototypes, and project-based group work solving real engineering challenges.
Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a Leaving Certificate with at least six subjects including English and Mathematics. Higher Level Mathematics is almost always required and is a significant competitive advantage; some programmes also specify a science subject such as Physics or Chemistry at Ordinary or Higher Level. CAO points for programmes at TU Dublin, UL and ATU are generally competitive to moderately competitive, varying by institution and year. If you do not meet the direct entry requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET award in Engineering Technology or a related discipline can provide a progression route into the degree. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply directly through the mature-student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE schemes are available for those from socioeconomic disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.
The outlook for mechatronics and robotics graduates in Ireland is very positive, driven by continued investment in advanced manufacturing, Industry 4.0 adoption and the growth of the med-tech sector. Starting salaries typically range from around €35,000 to €45,000 per year, rising to €55,000–€80,000 or more with experience and specialisation. Ireland's IDA-supported manufacturing clusters in Limerick, Galway, Dublin and Cork create consistent local demand for engineering talent, reducing the need to emigrate to find quality roles. Engineers Ireland recognition of accredited programmes also supports career mobility across Europe.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly embedded in robotics and automation, with machine learning used for object recognition, predictive maintenance, adaptive control and autonomous navigation. As a student in this field you will encounter AI tools directly — programming neural networks for robotic vision systems and using simulation environments such as ROS (Robot Operating System) that increasingly incorporate AI-assisted design. Rather than replacing mechatronics engineers, AI is expanding what is possible, creating demand for engineers who understand both the physical hardware and the intelligent software that drives it. Staying current with AI-driven automation tools will be an ongoing part of your professional development throughout your career.
6 CAO courses lead to this qualification. Points shown are last year's Round 1 score.
