What will you learn?

Microelectronic Engineering covers the design, fabrication, and testing of integrated circuits, semiconductors, and sensor systems. You study physics, materials science, and electronic engineering alongside dedicated modules in VLSI design, cleanroom processing, and embedded systems. A significant part of your degree is spent in laboratories and a purpose-built cleanroom facility, where you gain hands-on experience fabricating real devices. Co-operative placements — typically one or two semesters — place you with Irish and multinational semiconductor companies, giving you industry experience before you graduate. A typical week combines lectures, simulation lab sessions, and practical cleanroom or circuit-design work, making this a very applied, technically demanding programme.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, and demand for this specialist programme means points requirements are moderate to high relative to general engineering. You will need to meet the standard Leaving Certificate minimum entry requirements, which typically include at least six subjects with passes at Ordinary level, including English and Irish or another language. Higher Level Mathematics is effectively essential, and Higher Level Physics is strongly recommended; both significantly strengthen your application and underpin the core technical content. QQI Level 5 or 6 FET awards in Engineering or Electronics can provide a progression route into the first or second year for applicants who do not enter via the Leaving Certificate. Mature students (aged 23 or over) may apply directly and are assessed on relevant work experience and aptitude; HEAR and DARE schemes provide alternative entry pathways for eligible applicants from socioeconomic or disability backgrounds.

Career Prospects

Ireland hosts one of Europe's highest concentrations of semiconductor and electronics multinationals, meaning demand for microelectronic engineering graduates consistently outpaces domestic supply. Salaries at entry level typically range from approximately €38,000 to €50,000 gross per annum, rising considerably with experience and specialisation. The national strategy around attracting advanced manufacturing investment, including in chip fabrication and R&D, further supports strong medium-term employment prospects. Graduates with co-op experience frequently receive job offers from their placement employer before finishing their degree.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and machine learning are increasingly integrated into chip design workflows, with tools that automate layout optimisation, fault detection, and design-rule checking, reducing some repetitive engineering tasks. However, the physical fabrication, process engineering, and hardware verification dimensions of this field remain highly human-dependent and cannot easily be automated. AI is creating new demand for microelectronic engineers who can design specialised hardware accelerators and neuromorphic chips to run AI workloads efficiently. Overall, AI is more likely to enhance productivity in this field than to reduce graduate employment prospects.
