What will you learn?

An MSc in Artificial Intelligence is a one-year, full-time taught postgraduate programme that gives you advanced expertise in the design, development and deployment of intelligent systems. You will study machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision and AI ethics. Modules typically combine lectures with substantial lab and programming work in Python and related frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch. A significant research or industry project in the second semester lets you apply these skills to a real-world problem, and some programmes include a placement semester or Erasmus exchange. By graduation you will be capable of building AI pipelines, evaluating model performance and critically assessing the societal implications of AI systems.

Required Education

Entry to an MSc in Artificial Intelligence normally requires an NFQ Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree (minimum 2.2, often 2.1 preferred) in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or a closely related discipline. Strong prior knowledge of programming (especially Python) and undergraduate-level statistics or linear algebra is typically expected and may be assessed at interview or through a pre-entry test. Springboard+ and the Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 1 funding have in recent years subsidised fees substantially for eligible applicants, including those upskilling from adjacent fields. Graduates of NFQ Level 8 programmes in non-computing disciplines with demonstrable coding experience are sometimes considered, particularly if they hold a postgraduate diploma in a technical area. Mature applicants with substantial industry experience in software development or data analytics may be considered on a case-by-case basis under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) provisions.

Career Prospects

Demand for AI professionals in Ireland is consistently strong, driven by Ireland's role as a European hub for global technology companies and growing domestic digital transformation investment. Graduates typically secure roles quickly, with starting salaries for AI and machine learning roles commonly ranging from approximately €55,000 to €75,000 gross per annum, rising significantly with experience. The establishment of the AI Ireland initiative and ongoing public and private R&D investment suggest continued growth in graduate opportunities. Those who wish to deepen their expertise further can progress to PhD research or applied research positions in institutes such as the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is, by definition, the subject matter of this programme, so graduates will be at the forefront of a field that is rapidly transforming virtually every industry. You will study both the construction and the critical evaluation of AI tools, including large language models similar to those already automating tasks in software development, legal research and content creation. Understanding AI's limitations, biases and ethical risks is built into the curriculum, preparing you to develop systems responsibly rather than simply deploying off-the-shelf solutions. This positions MSc AI graduates as architects and auditors of AI change rather than workers displaced by it.

How to apply

MSc programmes in Artificial Intelligence are postgraduate qualifications applied for directly through each institution's own postgraduate admissions portal — not through the CAO. Entry typically requires an NFQ Level 8 honours degree (minimum 2.2 or 2.1) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related discipline, with some programmes also considering professional experience.
