This QQI Level 6 programme prepares you to guide and lead groups safely in outdoor and adventure environments across Ireland and beyond. You study a broad range of disciplines including kayaking, hillwalking, rock climbing, orienteering, and coastal activities, building technical skill alongside leadership and group management. A significant portion of your week is spent outdoors on practical sessions, with classroom time covering risk assessment, environmental awareness, and outdoor first aid. You work towards nationally and internationally recognised awards such as Mountain Training and Paddle Ireland qualifications. Many programmes include placements at activity centres, often located along the Wild Atlantic Way, giving you real-world guiding experience with paying clients in some of Ireland's most dramatic landscapes.
Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in at least five subjects, including English. Physical fitness and a genuine enthusiasm for outdoor pursuits are essential, and many providers ask for evidence of prior experience in at least one outdoor activity. Leaving Certificate Physical Education, Geography, or Biology are useful but rarely mandatory. If you do not meet the Leaving Cert requirement, a QQI Level 5 Sport, Recreation and Leisure award provides a strong progression route onto this programme. Mature applicants aged 23 or over may apply through a mature-student entry process and are assessed on life and outdoor experience. HEAR and DARE access routes may be available through participating ETBs.
Demand for qualified outdoor guides in Ireland has grown steadily alongside the expansion of adventure tourism and the Wild Atlantic Way brand. Activity centres, particularly those catering to school groups and international tourists, consistently seek staff who hold recognised technical awards alongside a formal qualification. Seasonal work is common initially, but experienced guides with multiple discipline awards can secure year-round permanent positions. Ireland's growing focus on outdoor and adventure tourism as part of Fáilte Ireland's strategy supports continued employment growth in this sector.
AI has a relatively limited direct impact on the day-to-day work of an outdoor guide, where human judgement, physical skill, and interpersonal leadership remain central. However, digital tools using AI are increasingly used for weather forecasting, route planning, and risk modelling, and familiarity with these platforms is becoming useful on the job. Administrative tasks such as booking systems, client communications, and safety documentation at activity centres are increasingly automated. The hands-on, place-based nature of guiding means this profession is considered low-risk in terms of AI displacement.
Providers and indicative points are curated with AI support. Always double-check with the institution itself.
How to apply
QQI Level 6 Outdoor Adventure Guiding programmes are delivered through ETB Further Education & Training (FET) colleges and are applied for directly through the individual ETB provider or via www.fetchcourses.ie — not through the CAO. Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate or equivalent, a reasonable level of physical fitness, and some prior outdoor activity experience may be advantageous.
