This course introduces you to the practical realities of working on a manufacturing floor in Ireland's pharmaceutical and medical device industries. You will study Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), cleanroom protocols, quality systems, and the documentation standards that regulators such as the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) demand. Modules cover aseptic technique, process validation, equipment calibration, and health and safety in controlled environments. A typical week combines classroom theory with hands-on laboratory and cleanroom simulation sessions, and most programmes include a supervised work placement with a local biopharma or med-tech employer. You will graduate with the practical skills and industry-ready mindset that multinational manufacturers operating in Ireland actively seek.
Entry typically requires a Leaving Certificate with passes in five subjects, including English and either Maths or a science subject; Higher-level science or Maths is an advantage but not always mandatory. Subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Applied Mathematics are particularly useful preparation. QQI Level 5 awards in Science, Laboratory Techniques, or Manufacturing are also accepted as entry routes, making this a natural progression for PLC graduates. Mature applicants (23 or over) may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience in a manufacturing, healthcare, or technical setting. HEAR and DARE access schemes may be available through participating ETB colleges.
Demand for skilled technicians in Irish biopharma and med-tech manufacturing remains consistently strong, driven by major capital investment from multinationals and ongoing expansion of existing sites. Graduate unemployment in this field is very low, and many students secure permanent roles through their work placement before completing the course. Starting salaries for manufacturing or quality technicians typically range from approximately €28,000 to €36,000 gross per year, with experienced technicians earning considerably more. The sector's strategic importance to the Irish economy means long-term job security is generally good.
Artificial intelligence and automation are increasingly present in pharmaceutical manufacturing through predictive maintenance systems, automated visual inspection of products, and AI-assisted batch record review. As a technician, you will be expected to work alongside these tools rather than be replaced by them, and understanding data integrity and electronic batch records is becoming essential. AI is also being used to optimise cleanroom environmental monitoring and flag deviations in real time. Human oversight, GMP compliance judgement, and hands-on technical skills remain central to the role and cannot be fully automated.

How to apply
QQI Level 6 Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Manufacturing programmes are FET (Further Education and Training) courses delivered through ETB colleges and in partnership with technological universities; applicants apply directly to the relevant ETB college or further education institute, not through the CAO. Some programmes may be employer-linked or Springboard+ funded, so it is worth checking fetchcourses.ie and springboardcourses.ie for current intake details and any specific entry requirements (typically Leaving Certificate or equivalent QQI Level 5).
