A Physics degree gives you a deep understanding of the fundamental laws governing matter, energy, space and time. You will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and modern physics, progressing to specialisms such as photonics, astrophysics, computational physics, or medical physics in later years. Practical laboratory work is central to every year, developing precision measurement and data analysis skills, and many programmes include a research project in your final year alongside optional Erasmus exchanges to European universities. A typical week combines lectures, problem-solving tutorials, and lab sessions where you design experiments and interpret results. Graduates leave with powerful quantitative and analytical abilities valued well beyond physics itself.
Entry is through the CAO and typically requires a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including at least two Higher-level subjects. Higher-level Mathematics is almost always required and a strong result is essential; Higher-level Physics is highly desirable and sometimes mandatory at certain institutions. CAO points for Physics programmes at universities such as TCD, UCD, and DCU are generally competitive to high, reflecting demand for numerate graduates. If you do not meet direct entry requirements, a QQI Level 5 or 6 FET award in Science can provide a recognised progression pathway to the Level 8 programme. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply through the mature student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE schemes support applicants from socioeconomic or disability backgrounds.
Demand for physics graduates in Ireland is strong, driven by the concentration of multinational technology and med-tech companies as well as growing investment in renewable energy and semiconductor research. Starting salaries for graduate roles typically range from around €32,000 to €42,000, with specialist or postgraduate-qualified physicists earning considerably more. The analytical and computational skills developed during the degree make physics graduates highly adaptable across sectors, keeping unemployment rates among graduates relatively low.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are already integral to modern physics research, used in data analysis, simulation, and pattern recognition in fields ranging from astrophysics to materials science. As a physics student you are increasingly expected to use AI-assisted tools for modelling complex systems and interpreting large experimental datasets. While AI augments the work of physicists, the deep theoretical reasoning and experimental judgement central to the discipline remain distinctly human skills. Overall, AI is transforming how physicists work rather than replacing the profession.
14 CAO courses lead to this qualification. Points shown are last year's Round 1 score.

How to apply
Apply through the CAO (cao.ie) by 1 February for the standard deadline; most Physics programmes are offered via a broad Science entry route in Round 1, with specialisation chosen in later years. Ulster University applicants from the Republic should apply via UCAS rather than the CAO.
