Physics with Astronomy

Science & Mathematics

Duration

4 years

Level

Bachelor

Outlook

Growing

What will you learn?

Studying Physics with Astronomy at degree level gives you a rigorous grounding in classical and modern physics alongside dedicated modules in astrophysics, cosmology, and observational astronomy. You will explore topics ranging from quantum mechanics and electromagnetism to stellar evolution, galaxy formation, and the large-scale structure of the universe. Practical laboratory sessions develop your experimental and data-analysis skills, while access to facilities such as Dunsink Observatory and Ireland's contribution to I-LOFAR (the Low Frequency Array) gives you genuine research exposure. A typical week blends lectures, problem-solving tutorials, computational workshops, and scheduled lab time. In later years you undertake a substantial research project, and some programmes offer Erasmus+ exchange placements at European research institutions.

Required Education

Entry is normally through the CAO, requiring a Leaving Certificate with at least six subjects including English and Mathematics. Higher-level Mathematics is essential, and Higher-level Physics is strongly advantageous; where Physics is unavailable, Chemistry or Applied Mathematics can substitute in some institutions. CAO points are generally high, reflecting strong demand and the mathematical rigour of the programme. Applicants without the Leaving Certificate may enter via a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET award in Science, subject to the institution's minimum mathematics grade requirements. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through a separate CAO strand, and HEAR and DARE schemes support students from under-represented or disability backgrounds. Some institutions offer a common Science entry route that allows you to specialise in Physics with Astronomy after first year.

Career Prospects

Demand for graduates with advanced quantitative and data-skills is strong in Ireland, particularly in the technology, finance, and pharmaceutical sectors that dominate the Irish economy. While dedicated astronomer or research physicist posts are competitive and often require postgraduate qualifications, the transferable skills of a physics degree keep graduate unemployment very low. Salaries for physics graduates entering data or technology roles typically range from roughly €35,000 to €50,000 at entry level, rising considerably with experience or postgraduate study. Ireland's growing space-technology sector, supported by Enterprise Ireland and membership of the European Space Agency, is creating additional specialist opportunities.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are already central tools in modern astronomy, used to classify galaxies, detect exoplanets, and process the enormous datasets produced by facilities such as I-LOFAR. As a student, you will be expected to develop competence in Python and data-science libraries that interface directly with AI-driven analysis pipelines. In the broader physics job market, AI is reshaping roles in simulation, materials discovery, and financial modelling, meaning graduates with both physics fundamentals and AI literacy are particularly sought after. The discipline is well-positioned to benefit from AI rather than be disrupted by it, as physical intuition and mathematical rigour remain essential for interpreting AI outputs.

How to apply

All undergraduate Physics with Astronomy programmes in Ireland are accessed through the CAO (Central Applications Office) at cao.ie, with applications typically opening in November for the following September intake. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Mathematics and Physics are generally required or strongly recommended for entry.
