A Speech and Language Therapy degree prepares you to assess, diagnose and treat communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan. You will study linguistics, anatomy, phonetics, psychology and the neuroscience of communication, alongside modules on conditions such as stammering, aphasia, autism spectrum disorder, voice disorders and dysphagia. The programme is heavily clinical, with structured placements in HSE primary care teams, schools, acute hospital wards and community disability services beginning as early as second year. A typical week balances lectures and skills labs — where you practise therapy techniques on peers and with simulated clients — with weekly clinic supervision and written case-study work. Some programmes offer Erasmus opportunities in European partner universities. You graduate ready to work with children and adults across a wide range of settings.

Speech and Language Therapist
Entry is through the CAO and competition for places is very high, reflecting the limited number of places nationally across TCD, UCC, University of Galway and UL. You will typically need six Leaving Certificate subjects including English and Irish at Ordinary level as a minimum, and most successful applicants hold Higher Level grades in Biology or another science subject, along with strong results in English. Some programmes specify or strongly recommend Higher Level Biology, Chemistry or Maths. QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET awards in a health or science discipline can provide a progression route for mature applicants, and some institutions participate in HEAR and DARE access schemes for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities. Mature applicants aged 23 or over on 1 January of the entry year may apply through the mature student category and are typically interviewed. Work or volunteering experience with people who have communication difficulties is strongly advantageous at interview.
Demand for speech and language therapists in Ireland consistently outstrips supply, and newly qualified graduates have strong employment prospects in both the public and private sectors. HSE recruitment takes place throughout the year, and many graduates secure posts before completing their degree. Salaries for a staff grade SLT in the HSE typically start at approximately €37,000–€42,000 gross per annum, rising significantly at senior and clinical specialist grades. Private practice and independent work offer additional earning potential, particularly in paediatric assessments and school-based services.
AI-powered tools are beginning to support SLT practice through automated speech analysis, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) applications, and apps that provide structured home-practice exercises for clients. These technologies can enhance therapy delivery but require clinical oversight to ensure they are used appropriately and ethically. The interpersonal, relational and diagnostic dimensions of the SLT role — building therapeutic rapport, making complex clinical judgements and adapting therapy in real time — remain firmly human-centred and are difficult to automate. Overall, AI is likely to augment rather than replace the SLT profession in the foreseeable future.

How to apply
Applications are made through the CAO (cao.ie) by 1 February each year for undergraduate entry; all four programmes are highly competitive and require strong Leaving Certificate results, with some programmes also specifying subject requirements such as a language and a science subject. Work experience in a speech and language therapy setting is strongly recommended and may form part of the selection process at some institutions.
