A Sports Management degree equips you with the business, leadership and operational skills needed to run sport organisations, venues and events. You study areas such as sports marketing, finance, event management, human resource management and sports law, alongside an understanding of how the Irish and international sport sectors are structured. Practical work is central to the programme — you typically complete a substantial work placement with a professional club, Local Sports Partnership, national governing body or commercial facility. Modules often include fieldwork, case studies and live project briefs with real organisations. By final year you can specialise in areas such as facility management, community sport development or sports entrepreneurship.
Entry is through the CAO, and most programmes require a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate including English and Mathematics, typically at Ordinary level or above. Higher-level Mathematics or Business can strengthen your application and is valued in a business-facing degree. CAO points required are generally moderate, though competition varies across institutions. If you do not meet the Leaving Certificate requirements, a relevant QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Sport, Recreation or Business can provide a progression route into Year 1 or Year 2. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply directly through the CAO mature-student route, and HEAR and DARE schemes offer reduced-points access for eligible applicants.
Demand for qualified sport management professionals in Ireland has grown steadily alongside increased State investment in community sport and major event hosting. The continued expansion of Local Sports Partnerships and the professionalisation of Irish club structures means graduate opportunities are reasonably solid. Salaries for entry-level roles typically range from approximately €28,000 to €36,000 per year, rising significantly with experience and managerial responsibility. Graduates with strong commercial or digital marketing skills are particularly sought after by governing bodies and private facility operators.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence sports management through data analytics tools used in fan engagement, ticketing optimisation and performance reporting for clubs and facilities. Graduates who can interpret data dashboards and use CRM or event-management software will have a clear advantage in the job market. AI is unlikely to replace the relationship-building, leadership and community engagement elements that are core to many sport management roles in Ireland. Upskilling in digital marketing analytics and sport-specific data platforms is becoming increasingly worthwhile.
