Novelist
Mayo novelist whose books became a generation's reference.
Sally Rooney grew up in Castlebar, County Mayo, and showed a strong interest in literature and debate from a young age. She went on to study English at Trinity College Dublin, one of Ireland's most prestigious universities. At Trinity she became an exceptionally accomplished debater, winning competitions at a European level — a skill that sharpened her ability to argue ideas with precision, something that would later define her writing.
While still a student, Rooney began writing fiction seriously, and her debut novel Conversations with Friends was published in 2017 to immediate critical attention. Her follow-up, Normal People (2018), became a cultural phenomenon, selling millions of copies and being adapted into a hugely popular TV series. She has since published two further novels, cementing her reputation as one of the most significant writers of her generation. In 2022, Time magazine recognised her among the world's most influential people.
Sally Rooney's story shows that writing honestly about the world you actually know — your own friendships, doubts, and relationships — can connect with millions of people across the globe. You don't need to wait until you're older or more 'qualified' to start creating; Rooney was publishing while still a student. If there's a subject or craft you care deeply about, the time to take it seriously is now.
