Doctor & Activist
Doctor and activist who founded a children's hospital.
Kathleen Lynn was born in County Mayo in 1874 and showed an early determination to pursue medicine at a time when very few women were encouraged to do so. She studied medicine at the Royal University of Ireland and qualified as a doctor, going on to gain further clinical experience in the United States and at hospitals in Dublin. Earning a medical degree as a woman in the late 19th century required extraordinary persistence against significant institutional resistance.
Lynn built her career as a doctor in Dublin while becoming deeply involved in political and social activism, participating in the 1916 Easter Rising as a medical officer. Her political activities led to periods of arrest and forced her to navigate a career under considerable pressure from both authorities and social convention. Most significantly, she co-founded St Ultan's Hospital in Dublin in 1919, the first hospital in Ireland dedicated entirely to the care of infants, driven by the devastating child mortality she witnessed among Dublin's poor.
Kathleen Lynn's story shows that your profession can be a powerful tool for justice, not just a job. If you care about a problem in your community, your skills and education are the means to do something real about it. You don't have to choose between doing your work well and standing up for what matters.
