Education

Nóirín O'Sullivan grew up in Ireland at a time when very few women considered careers in An Garda Síochána. She pursued her education with a strong interest in public service, law, and community safety. Like many Irish students, she worked hard through her secondary school years to build the foundations for a demanding professional career. She went on to develop her expertise through Garda training and continued professional development throughout her career.

Career

Nóirín joined An Garda Síochána and steadily worked her way up through the ranks over several decades, building a reputation for leadership and integrity. In 2014, she made history by becoming the first woman ever appointed as Garda Commissioner, breaking through one of the most significant glass ceilings in Irish public life. After her time as Commissioner, she took her skills to the international stage, serving as Director of Strategic Partnerships for Europe at the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In 2018, she reached another milestone when she was appointed UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Department of Safety and Security.

Key Lesson

Nóirín's story shows that patience and dedication in a career can take you places that nobody in your position has ever been before. If you care about justice, safety, and your community, a career in public service can lead far beyond what you might imagine from the outside. You don't have to follow a well-worn path — sometimes you get to make one.
