Rock Musician & Activist
U2 frontman and campaigner.
Paul Hewson grew up in Artane, Dublin, and attended Mount Temple Comprehensive School on the northside of the city. It was there, in 1976, that he joined the band that would become U2, forming friendships that would define his entire life. Mount Temple was unusually progressive for its time, and that open environment encouraged Paul to explore music, faith, and ideas. He never pursued a traditional third-level route — the band became his education.
U2 started out playing small Dublin venues before building a following across Ireland and then the UK. Years of relentless touring, recording, and refining their sound eventually led to global success with albums like 'The Joshua Tree'. Alongside music, Bono became a prominent campaigner on issues like African debt relief and the AIDS crisis, showing that an artist's platform can stretch far beyond the stage. Not every step was smooth — the band faced commercial and critical setbacks — but they consistently reinvented themselves rather than fading away.
You don't need a conventional path to build something extraordinary — passion, commitment, and the right people around you matter more than following the expected route. If something you care about deeply, whether music, justice, or ideas, pulls at you strongly enough, take it seriously and pursue it with everything you have.
