Central Banker
Central Bank governor during the bailout years.
Patrick Honohan grew up in Ireland with a strong interest in mathematics and economics from an early age. He studied at University College Dublin, where he developed the analytical foundations that would shape his entire career. His academic work took him beyond Ireland, and he went on to build deep expertise in macroeconomics and monetary policy through research and further study at an international level.
Honohan built a respected career as an economist, working with institutions such as the World Bank and the Economic and Social Research Institute in Dublin before becoming one of Ireland's leading academic economists. In 2009, at one of the most turbulent moments in Irish history, he was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland. He is perhaps best remembered for the live RTÉ radio interview in which he told the nation that Ireland would need an international bailout — a moment of rare honesty from a public official during a crisis. After stepping down in 2015, he continued his work as a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.
Patrick Honohan's story shows that technical knowledge — the kind built quietly through study and research — can matter enormously when a country needs steady hands in a crisis. For Irish students, it's a reminder that careers in economics, finance, or public service are not just about numbers; they're about having the courage to tell difficult truths when it counts.
