Actor
Maynooth actor who went from GAA to Gladiator.
Paul Mescal grew up in Maynooth, Co. Kildare, where he attended Maynooth Post Primary School. Like many Irish teenagers, he was heavily involved in GAA, playing football for his local club. After school, he went on to study acting at the Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin, where he trained intensively in theatre.
After graduating from the Lir Academy, Paul landed the lead role of Connell in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney's Normal People in 2020, which became a global phenomenon almost overnight. From there he earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in Aftersun, won a Laurence Olivier Award for theatre work in London, and went on to star in the Hollywood blockbuster Gladiator II. His rise was rapid, but it was built on years of disciplined training and a willingness to take on demanding, vulnerable roles.
Paul's story shows that serious craft and dedication to your art — whether that's training at drama school or throwing yourself into GAA on a Saturday — builds the foundation for something bigger. You don't have to move to London or Los Angeles from the start; sometimes the path begins right where you are in Ireland.
