Humanitarian Activist
Founder of Chernobyl Children International.
Adi Roche grew up in Clonmel, County Tipperary, where she developed a strong sense of social justice and community from an early age. She was an active member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in Ireland as a young woman, which shaped her worldview long before any formal career path emerged. Her real education came through grassroots campaigning and direct engagement with causes she believed in deeply. She learned that passion and persistence can open doors that no degree alone can unlock.
In 1986, when the Chernobyl nuclear disaster struck in Ukraine, Adi felt compelled to act. She founded Chernobyl Children International, a humanitarian organisation that has since brought thousands of children affected by radiation to Ireland for respite care and medical treatment. In 1997, she ran as a candidate in the Irish presidential election, putting her beliefs onto a national stage even though she was ultimately unsuccessful. That setback did not define her — her decades of tireless voluntary work did.
Adi's story shows that you do not need a traditional career ladder to make a real difference in the world — you need conviction and the courage to keep going. If something in the world feels deeply wrong to you, that feeling is worth listening to, because it might be pointing you toward your life's work.
