Politician & Doctor
GP who became Taoiseach.
Leo Varadkar grew up in Dublin and attended King's Hospital School in Palmerstown, where he developed a strong interest in science and current affairs. He went on to study medicine at Trinity College Dublin, graduating as a doctor — a path that required serious dedication through his Leaving Cert and years of demanding college study. Qualifying as a GP, he worked in medicine while simultaneously becoming involved in Fine Gael politics, showing that a professional career and public service don't have to be separate paths.
Varadkar was first elected as a TD for Dublin West in 2007 at just 28 years old, one of the youngest TDs in the Dáil at the time. He held several senior ministerial roles, including Minister for Health and Minister for Social Protection, before becoming leader of Fine Gael and Taoiseach in 2017 — the youngest person ever to hold that office. In 2018 he publicly came out as gay, becoming Ireland's first openly LGBT+ Taoiseach, and he went on to lead campaigns that changed the Irish constitution on marriage equality and reproductive rights.
Leo Varadkar's story shows that your career doesn't have to fit one neat box — you can build real expertise in a profession and still pursue a bigger public role. Whatever you're passionate about, whether it's science, justice, or your community, those interests can shape a path that genuinely matters.
