Obstetrician
First woman master of the National Maternity Hospital.
Rhona Mahony grew up in Ireland and pursued medicine, graduating from University College Dublin (UCD), one of the country's leading medical schools. Like many students aiming for medicine, she would have worked hard through her Leaving Cert to secure the CAO points required for such a competitive course. She went on to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology, undertaking years of postgraduate training and building deep expertise in the care of women and babies.
Rhona climbed the ranks in one of Ireland's most respected medical institutions, the National Maternity Hospital at Holles Street in Dublin. In 2012, she made history by becoming the first woman ever to be appointed Master of the hospital — a role that had existed for over a century and had always been held by men. As Master, she was not only a leading clinician but also a prominent public voice on women's healthcare, speaking out on issues that directly affected women across Ireland.
Breaking a barrier that has stood for over a hundred years takes both skill and courage — and Rhona Mahony shows that expertise and determination together can change what's considered possible. If a path you care about seems closed off because 'it's always been done a certain way', that's often exactly where the most important work is waiting to be done.
