Parke's Castle: A Plantation Fortress on Lough Gill

Step inside a beautifully restored 17th-century plantation castle on the shores of Lough Gill in County Leitrim, Ireland.

Perched right on the edge of Lough Gill in County Leitrim, Parke's Castle is one of the most atmospheric heritage sites in the north-west of Ireland. The castle is a well-preserved example of a plantation-era fortified manor house, built in the early seventeenth century by English planter Robert Parke on the site of an earlier tower house belonging to the O'Rourke chieftains. The OPW has restored the structure with great care, and what you see today gives a remarkably clear picture of how such a defended residence would have functioned in its time.

The castle sits just outside the village of Dromahair, which is the nearest town and a handy reference point when you are planning your journey. From Sligo town, head south-east along the road towards Dromahair — the drive is roughly fifteen kilometres and takes you through lovely drumlin countryside before the lough comes into view. From Carrick-on-Shannon, the county town of Leitrim, the journey is around forty kilometres heading north-west. There is a car park directly at the castle, so arriving by car is the most practical option; public transport connections to this part of Leitrim are limited, so if you are not driving, a taxi from Sligo is worth considering.

Once inside, the guided tour — which is the standard way to experience the castle — takes you through the great hall, the gatehouse and the defensive bawn walls that enclose the courtyard. Guides explain the layers of history on the site, from the Gaelic chieftains of Connacht through the plantation period and into the castle's later decline and restoration. The lakeshore setting adds real drama; you can look out from the walls directly onto Lough Gill, and on a clear day the view across to the wooded islands is genuinely striking. W.B. Yeats drew inspiration from this landscape, and the lake's most famous island, Innisfree, is visible in the distance.

Admission is charged and falls roughly in the range of around five to ten euro for adults, with concessions available for children, students and older visitors; the OPW Heritage Card covers entry if you plan to visit several sites during your trip. The castle operates a seasonal opening pattern, typically welcoming visitors from late spring through to early autumn, so it is worth checking the official Heritage Ireland website before travelling to confirm current access. Wear comfortable shoes, as the ground in the courtyard and along the lakeshore can be uneven. A light waterproof layer is sensible year-round in Leitrim.

Local tip: most visitors head straight back to Sligo or Carrick after the castle, but if you walk a short distance along the lakeshore path you will find a quiet picnic area with an unobstructed view of the lough that the car park crowds rarely reach. It is an ideal spot to sit and take in the landscape that has barely changed in centuries. The village of Dromahair itself, just minutes away, has a handful of traditional pubs where you can warm up afterwards — the kind of unhurried, locals-first places that are increasingly rare.

Parke's Castle is the sort of place that rewards a slow, unhurried visit rather than a quick stop. The combination of genuine architectural history, a wild lakeshore setting and the broader cultural landscape of County Leitrim makes it one of those heritage sites that stays with you long after you have left. If you have an interest in Ireland's plantation history or simply want to stand somewhere that feels genuinely old and untouched, this is well worth the journey.
