Volunteer at your local club or festival

"What if the best way into a community was through the back gate?"

Why this is so fun

There is something brilliant about being on the inside of an event everyone else just watches. You learn the names of people three generations older than you, you get shouted at cheerfully by a woman who has run the tea tent since 1987, and somehow by Sunday afternoon you feel like you belong in a place you barely noticed before. Volunteering cracks a town wide open. You also discover things about yourself — patience, initiative, the fact that you are actually gas craic when you are not staring at your phone.

Someone who did this

Aisling (30), Cork — works in HR, makes sourdough that never quite rises properly

I signed up to volunteer at Cork Midsummer Festival mostly because my Saturday had fallen through and I felt guilty sitting in the apartment.
