As an Account Manager you are responsible for maintaining and growing relationships with a portfolio of clients, acting as their primary point of contact within your organisation. Your day-to-day work involves understanding each client's needs, presenting suitable products or services, negotiating renewals, and identifying opportunities to upsell or cross-sell. You work closely with internal teams such as sales, marketing, customer success, and technical support to ensure clients receive a high standard of service. In agency and SaaS environments in particular, you track account performance, produce regular reports, and develop strategies to retain and grow revenue. You are measured largely on client satisfaction, retention rates, and your ability to meet or exceed sales targets.
Listen: a day as an Account Manager
You arrive at the Dublin city-centre office just before eight-thirty and open your CRM — the software your team uses to track every client interaction, deal stage, and renewal date. You spend the first half hour scanning your task list, flagging two accounts whose quarterly review meetings are due this week, and reading an overnight email from a client in Cork who is unhappy with a recent service update. That message goes straight to the top of your priority list. By nine o'clock you are on a video call with the Cork client. You listen carefully, take detailed notes in the CRM, and agree on a clear set of actions, including looping in the technical support team to resolve the issue within forty-eight hours. Keeping your word on timelines like this is what determines whether a client stays or leaves at renewal.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in Business, Marketing, Commerce, or a related field is the most common route into Account Management in Ireland. Relevant degree programmes are offered at UCD, DCU, UCC, UL, TU Dublin, and other higher education institutions through the CAO. Leaving Certificate subjects such as Business, Economics, Mathematics, and English at Higher Level provide a strong foundation for these programmes. A QQI Level 5 or 6 PLC award in Sales, Marketing, or Business from a College of Further Education can also serve as a pathway into junior account executive roles, sometimes with progression to a degree via a Higher Education links place. While there is no statutory professional registration body for Account Managers, membership of the Marketing Institute of Ireland (MII) or similar professional bodies is valued by employers and supports continuing professional development.
Most Account Managers begin in a junior or graduate sales role, such as Sales Development Representative or Account Executive, gaining experience in prospecting, customer contact, and CRM systems. With a proven track record of hitting targets and retaining clients, progression to Account Manager typically follows within two to four years. From there, experienced professionals can move into Senior Account Manager or Key Account Manager positions, taking on larger portfolios and more strategic responsibilities. Further advancement can lead to roles such as Head of Sales, Sales Director, or Commercial Director, particularly in Irish technology firms, marketing agencies, and SaaS companies.
AI tools are increasingly automating routine elements of account management, such as generating sales reports, drafting follow-up emails, and flagging at-risk accounts through predictive analytics within CRM platforms. This frees Account Managers to focus on higher-value activities such as building trust, navigating complex negotiations, and developing bespoke client strategies. Familiarity with AI-powered CRM features and data analysis tools is becoming an expected competency rather than a bonus skill. However, the fundamentally human aspects of this role — empathy, relationship building, and nuanced communication — mean that AI is far more likely to augment Account Managers than to replace them.
