Actuarial assistants support qualified actuaries by gathering, cleaning and analysing statistical data used to calculate insurance premium rates and assess financial risk. You build and maintain spreadsheet models, run statistical forecasts and compile reports that help the business set pricing strategies for products such as life insurance, health cover and general insurance. Much of your day involves working with large datasets using software such as R, Python or specialised actuarial tools, and you collaborate closely with senior actuaries, underwriters and finance teams. You are also likely to spend a significant portion of your time studying towards the professional examinations set by the Society of Actuaries in Ireland, which are typically supported by your employer.
Listen: a day as an Actuarial Assistant
You arrive at the office in Dublin city centre at half eight, make a coffee and open your laptop. Your first task is checking overnight data feeds from the company's policy administration system. A batch of new motor insurance claims came in overnight, and before anything else you need to download the raw files, check them for obvious errors — missing values, implausible claim amounts — and load the cleaned data into R. This part is less exciting than it sounds; a surprising amount of actuarial work is simply making sure the numbers are trustworthy before anyone draws conclusions from them. By half nine you join a short team stand-up with two senior actuaries and a colleague from the pricing team. They want an updated loss ratio report — that is, the ratio of claims paid out versus premiums collected — for the motor book by end of week. You take notes and return to your desk to pull the relevant data from the shared drive.

Some videos were filmed in the UK. The work itself is the same, but the exams, qualifications and pay they mention are British — we include them so you get a feel for the job.
A strong Leaving Certificate with Higher Level Mathematics is essential, as most employers and third-level programmes in this field require a high standard of maths. Entry into actuarial science or a related discipline such as mathematics, statistics or financial mathematics at NFQ Level 8 is the typical academic route, with programmes available at UCD, TCD, University of Galway, UL and DCU, among others. Some graduates enter from adjacent Level 8 degrees in economics, finance or data science and then undertake actuarial exams separately. CAO points for actuarial science programmes are competitive, reflecting the mathematical demands of the course. Once in employment, you are expected to work towards the professional qualification awarded by the Society of Actuaries in Ireland, progressing through a series of examinations over several years. There is currently no statutory registration body for actuaries in Ireland, but Fellowship of the Society of Actuaries is the recognised professional benchmark in the sector.
Most actuarial assistants begin their careers in an insurance company or actuarial consultancy in Ireland immediately after graduating, often through a graduate programme that includes structured exam support. As you pass professional examinations with the Society of Actuaries, you progress to analyst and then associate actuary roles, taking on greater responsibility for model design and client-facing work. Achieving Fellowship of the Society of Actuaries typically unlocks senior actuary and management positions within pricing, reserving, risk or product development teams. Some Fellows move into broader financial leadership roles such as Chief Risk Officer or Chief Financial Officer, or establish themselves in independent consultancy.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly being used alongside traditional actuarial models to improve the accuracy of risk predictions and pricing algorithms, meaning actuarial assistants benefit from familiarity with these technologies. Routine data-gathering and cleaning tasks are becoming more automated, freeing actuarial staff to focus on model interpretation, assumption-setting and business decision-making. However, the professional judgement, regulatory accountability and communication skills that are central to actuarial work remain firmly human responsibilities. The profession is adapting rather than contracting, with growing demand for actuaries who can bridge the gap between statistical modelling and AI-driven analytics.
