What will you learn?

A Bachelor of Science in Mathematics gives you a deep grounding in pure and applied mathematics, alongside statistics and mathematical modelling. You will study areas such as algebra, analysis, differential equations, probability, and numerical methods. Many programmes allow you to specialise in a strand such as financial mathematics, data science, or statistics as you progress through your degree. Practical work includes computer labs using software such as Python, MATLAB, or R, and some programmes incorporate a final-year research project or dissertation. A typical week combines lectures, small-group tutorials, and problem-solving sessions, demanding a high level of independent study and logical rigour.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, and points for Mathematics at leading universities are typically competitive to highly competitive. You will need a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including English, and Higher Level Mathematics is almost universally required, often at a strong grade. Some programmes also look for performance in Higher Level Physics or another science subject. If you do not meet entry requirements directly, a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 FET award in a science or computing discipline can provide a progression route to Level 7 or Level 8 programmes. Mature applicants (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature-student CAO route, and HEAR and DARE schemes support applicants from socioeconomic or disability backgrounds.

Career Prospects

Graduate demand for mathematicians in Ireland remains strong, particularly in financial services, insurance, and the technology sector. Actuarial and data-focused roles are among the better-remunerated graduate positions, with starting salaries typically ranging from around €32,000 to €45,000 and rising significantly with professional qualifications and experience. The growth of data-driven industries and Ireland's position as a European hub for finance and technology continues to sustain healthy employment prospects for mathematics graduates. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study, which opens doors to research, academia, and higher-level analytical roles.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence and machine learning draw heavily on the mathematical foundations taught in this degree, including linear algebra, probability, and optimisation, making mathematics graduates well placed to work in or alongside AI-focused teams. AI tools are increasingly used within the field itself for symbolic computation, automated theorem assistance, and statistical modelling, and you will likely encounter these during your studies. Rather than displacing mathematicians, AI is expanding the range of problems they are asked to solve, particularly in data science and financial modelling. A solid mathematical education provides the theoretical understanding needed to critically evaluate and properly apply AI methods.

How to apply

Apply through the CAO (cao.ie) by 1 February for standard entry; most programmes require Leaving Certificate Mathematics at Higher Level (typically H3 or above) as a core entry requirement. Some universities operate common science entry codes in first year, with students specialising in Mathematics after year one.
