As an Aquaculture Production Manager you plan, direct and coordinate the day-to-day farming of fish, shellfish or other aquatic species across large-scale production sites along Ireland's coastline or inland waterways. You oversee stocking, feeding, health monitoring and harvesting schedules, making sure production targets are met while animal welfare and environmental standards are maintained. You work closely with veterinarians, marine biologists, site operatives and regulatory bodies such as Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) to ensure compliance with legislation governing water quality, stock health and sustainable harvesting. You also analyse production data, compare forecasts with actual yields and manage budgets and resources across the operation.
Listen: a day as an Aquaculture Production Manager
Your alarm goes off at 6:00 a.m. You are based at a salmon farm on the west coast of Galway, and the first thing you do before leaving home is check the overnight sensor readings on your tablet. The site uses automated water-quality monitors that log dissolved oxygen, temperature and salinity every fifteen minutes. One pen is showing a slight dip in oxygen levels, so you send a quick message to the early-shift operative to increase aeration before you even arrive on site. You reach the farm by 7:00 a.m. and pull on waterproofs before walking the cages with the morning crew. You physically inspect the nets for damage, watch the fish behaviour and check feed consumption from the previous evening. Healthy fish feed predictably; any drop in appetite can signal stress or the early stages of disease, so you log your observations on the production software the company uses to track daily biomass estimates.

Enterprise Ireland's New Frontiers programme
A degree in Aquaculture, Marine Science, Marine Biology or a related discipline at NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 is the typical minimum entry route; programmes are offered at institutions such as Atlantic Technological University (ATU), University of Galway and Munster Technological University (MTU). Leaving Certificate subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Mathematics and Geography provide a strong foundation for these courses. A QQI Level 5 or Level 6 PLC award in Aquaculture or Fish Farming can provide an alternative pathway into the sector, with progression to a degree possible thereafter. BIM operates specialist training programmes and short courses in aquaculture that complement formal qualifications and are highly valued by employers. Postgraduate study at NFQ Level 9 in areas such as Sustainable Aquaculture or Environmental Management can be advantageous for advancement to senior management roles. No statutory professional registration body currently exists for this occupation in Ireland, though compliance with BIM licensing and relevant environmental legislation is mandatory.
Most people enter the aquaculture sector as site operatives or technicians after completing a relevant degree or PLC qualification, gaining hands-on experience in daily husbandry and harvesting tasks. With two to four years of operational experience, progression to a supervisory or assistant manager role is typical, taking on greater responsibility for planning and staff oversight. Further experience and, in many cases, postgraduate study can lead to a Production Manager position with full operational accountability for one or more sites. Senior professionals may progress to regional or national management roles within larger aquaculture companies, or move into consultancy, research or policy work with bodies such as BIM or the Marine Institute.
AI and advanced data analytics are increasingly being applied to aquaculture production, with automated sensors and machine-learning tools helping managers monitor water quality, feed conversion rates and stock health in real time. These technologies can flag anomalies earlier than traditional methods, reducing losses and improving efficiency, but they require managers to interpret outputs and make informed decisions rather than simply following automated recommendations. Drone and underwater camera technology powered by AI is beginning to supplement or replace manual stock assessments on larger sites, reducing the need for labour-intensive observation. Overall, AI augments rather than replaces the role, raising the value of managers who can combine biological expertise with the ability to work with digital production systems.
