Animal Science

Environment, Agriculture & Animals

Duration

4 years

Level

Bachelor

Outlook

Stable

What will you learn?

Animal Science at degree level covers the biology, nutrition, genetics, and welfare of farmed and companion animals, with a strong emphasis on the agri-food industry. You study animal physiology, reproduction, behaviour, and production systems, alongside food quality and sustainability in agriculture. Practical laboratory work and farm placements are central to the programme, giving you hands-on experience with livestock management and data collection. At UCD, you may have the opportunity to undertake Erasmus exchanges with European agricultural universities. A typical week combines lectures in biochemistry or genetics, practical sessions in a teaching farm or lab, and tutorials discussing current issues in Irish and global animal production.

Required Education

Entry is through the CAO, and competitive points are typically moderate to high depending on the institution. You generally need a minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects, with at least two at Higher level, and a grade in Ordinary level Maths and English. Higher level Biology, Agricultural Science, or Chemistry is highly beneficial and sometimes required. QQI Level 5 or 6 qualifications in Agriculture or Science offer a recognised progression route for applicants without traditional Leaving Certificate grades. Mature students aged 23 or over may apply directly and are assessed on relevant experience and an interview. HEAR and DARE schemes provide reduced-points entry for eligible applicants.

Career Prospects

Demand for Animal Science graduates in Ireland remains steady, supported by the significance of agriculture and the agri-food sector to the Irish economy. Teagasc and private industry regularly recruit graduates into advisory, technical, and research roles. Starting salaries typically range from approximately €28,000 to €36,000, with experienced professionals in specialist or senior roles earning considerably more. The growing focus on sustainable farming, food security, and animal welfare is creating new opportunities in consultancy and research.

Impact of AI on this program

Artificial intelligence and precision livestock farming technologies are increasingly influencing animal production, with tools for automated health monitoring, feed optimisation, and genetic selection becoming standard in progressive farm enterprises. As a graduate, you will be expected to interpret data from sensors, wearables, and farm management software. AI is unlikely to replace the hands-on advisory and welfare roles central to this field, but it will change how data is gathered and decisions are made. Familiarity with data analysis tools will be a growing advantage in the job market.
