What does an Aquaculture Technician do?

As an Aquaculture Technician you monitor and support the production of farmed fish, shellfish and other aquatic organisms at sites such as salmon farms, oyster beds and mussel lines along Ireland's west and south coasts. Your daily work involves collecting water and specimen samples, running laboratory tests, recording environmental data such as temperature, salinity and oxygen levels, and reporting findings to farm managers or research scientists. You operate and maintain specialist equipment including feeding systems, water-quality monitors and laboratory instruments, ensuring that health and biosecurity protocols are followed at all times. You work closely with farm operatives, marine biologists and inspectors from bodies such as BIM (Bord Iascaigh Mhara) and the Marine Institute, contributing to the safe and sustainable production of seafood.

A Day in the Life

Listen: a day as an Aquaculture Technician

0:00 / 0:00

Your alarm goes off at 6:15 a.m. The salmon farm site is a thirty-minute drive along the coast road in County Mayo, and you need to be there before the morning feeding run begins. You pull on waterproof overalls and steel-toecap boots before leaving the house, checking the weather app out of habit — a force-five forecast means one of the offshore cages may need extra attention today. By 7:00 a.m. you are on the jetty, signing into the site logbook and running through the biosecurity checklist. Visitors must dip boots, and all equipment entering the water zone is disinfected. You lower a multiparameter probe into the water beside the nearest cage to record dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity and pH. The readings go straight into a hand-held logger, and you transfer them to the farm's spreadsheet later. One oxygen reading is slightly lower than yesterday's — not alarming, but you flag it in the daily report for the farm manager.

Required Education

A Leaving Certificate with subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, and Mathematics provides a strong foundation for entry into this field. The most direct Irish route is a QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate in Aquaculture or a related programme in Marine or Environmental Science offered at institutes such as ATU Galway or MTU Cork. BIM also delivers dedicated aquaculture training courses and skills programmes through Teagasc and ETB partnerships, offering practical qualifications at NFQ Level 5 and 6. An NFQ Level 7 Ordinary Bachelor's degree in Aquaculture Science or Marine Biology is an option for those wishing to take on greater technical or research responsibilities. No statutory registration body currently governs this role, but BIM certification and food-safety hygiene training are expected by most employers.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

Most technicians begin as farm operatives or laboratory assistants, gaining hands-on experience in sampling, feeding management and basic water-quality testing. With a QQI Level 6 qualification and a few years of practical experience, you can progress to the role of Senior Aquaculture Technician, taking on greater responsibility for data analysis and day-to-day farm operations. Completing an NFQ Level 7 or 8 degree through part-time or Springboard+ programmes opens the door to roles in aquaculture research with organisations such as the Marine Institute or Teagasc. Experienced technicians with management skills may advance to Farm Manager or Aquaculture Development Officer positions, sometimes moving into regulatory or industry advisory roles with BIM.

AI Impact on the job

AI-driven sensor networks and automated water-quality monitoring systems are increasingly being deployed on Irish fish farms, reducing the need for some manual measurements and allowing for real-time alerts. Machine-learning tools can assist in early detection of disease patterns and feed-conversion anomalies by processing large datasets far faster than is possible manually. However, on-site fieldwork, physical sample collection and hands-on equipment maintenance cannot be automated, keeping the core practical duties of the technician firmly in human hands. Technicians who develop skills in interpreting AI-generated data outputs and using digital farm-management platforms will be best placed for career progression.
