Sustainable Agriculture

Environment, Agriculture & Animals

Duration

4 years

Level

Bachelor

Outlook

What will you learn?

This course gives you a thorough grounding in modern farming systems with a strong focus on environmental sustainability, soil science, crop production, and livestock management. You explore how Irish agriculture fits within EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) frameworks and learn to balance food production with ecological responsibility. Practical lab work, field trips to farms, and an industry placement — often arranged in partnership with Teagasc — form a central part of your studies. In a typical week you might attend lectures on agronomy or farm business management, carry out soil sampling in the field, and analyse data from local farm case studies. Specialisms can include organic farming, precision agriculture, and agri-environment schemes.

Required Education

Entry is typically through the CAO with a Leaving Certificate that includes passes in English, Maths, and a science subject such as Agricultural Science, Biology, or Chemistry. Higher-level science or Agricultural Science is strongly advantageous and may be specified by individual institutions. CAO points for these programmes are generally moderate, making them accessible compared to many other science degrees. QQI Level 5 or Level 6 awards in Agriculture or Horticulture from a College of Further Education or a Teagasc college offer a well-established progression route onto Level 7 programmes. Mature students (aged 23 or over) may apply through the mature entry scheme, and HEAR and DARE access routes are available for eligible applicants.

Career Prospects

Demand for graduates with sustainable agriculture expertise is growing steadily in Ireland, driven by EU Green Deal commitments and increasing pressure on farmers to adopt environmentally friendly practices. Teagasc and government bodies regularly recruit graduates, and the agri-food sector — one of Ireland's largest export industries — continues to seek skilled farm and sustainability advisers. Starting salaries typically range from approximately €28,000 to €36,000 per year, with experienced consultants and farm managers earning considerably more. Graduates who progress to a Level 8 honours degree or a postgraduate qualification tend to access higher-level advisory and research roles more readily.

Impact of AI on this program

AI and precision agriculture technologies are increasingly relevant to this field, with tools for soil monitoring, crop yield prediction, and livestock health tracking becoming standard on modern Irish farms. As a student and future professional, you will be expected to interpret data from sensors, drones, and farm management software. However, the hands-on, place-based nature of farm work means that human judgement and local knowledge remain essential, and AI is more likely to enhance your role than replace it. Courses are beginning to incorporate digital agri-technology modules to keep graduates prepared for these changes.
