As a Broadcast Producer you are responsible for planning, organising and overseeing the creation of radio or television programmes from initial concept through to final broadcast. You develop programme ideas, commission content, manage budgets, coordinate technical crews and supervise on-air talent to ensure each show meets its editorial and creative brief. Your working day involves collaborating closely with presenters, journalists, sound engineers, directors and commissioning editors, as well as negotiating with artists, agents and rights holders. You also evaluate broadcast output for quality and compliance, ensuring all content adheres to copyright legislation and broadcasting regulations set by Coimisiún na Meán (the Irish media regulator).
Listen: a day as a Broadcast Producer
Your alarm goes off at 6.15 a.m. You check your phone before you are even out of bed, scanning overnight emails from a production company in Galway about a contributor who has pulled out of this afternoon's pre-record. You fire off a quick reply asking for a replacement name by nine, then head in to the station. By 7.30 a.m. you are at your desk with a coffee, working through the running order for today's live afternoon programme in the station's content management system. You adjust item timings after yesterday's review flagged a music segment that overran by two minutes, then brief the researcher on three packages that still need fact-checking before transmission.
Leaving Certificate subjects such as English, Media Studies, Music, and Irish are all useful preparation for this career, as are Business and a modern language. The most common route into broadcast production in Ireland is a Level 8 Honours Bachelor degree in areas such as Journalism, Media Production, Communications, or Film and Television Production, offered at institutions including DCU, TU Dublin, UCC, and UL. Level 7 programmes in Media Production or Broadcasting at technological universities provide an alternative undergraduate pathway. Some entrants begin with a Level 5 or 6 PLC course in Media Production at a College of Further Education before progressing to a degree via the CAO or direct entry. Practical experience through internships, student radio (such as DCU FM or UCC 98.3FM), or community radio stations is highly valued by employers such as RTÉ, Newstalk, and independent production companies. There is no statutory professional registration body for broadcast producers in Ireland, though industry bodies such as the Institute of Advertising Practitioners in Ireland and Screen Producers Ireland offer relevant networking and professional development.
Many broadcast producers begin their careers in junior or assistant production roles, runner positions, or as broadcast journalists before moving into producing. With experience, you may progress to Senior Producer, Series Producer or Executive Producer, taking responsibility for entire programme strands or production slates. In Ireland, opportunities exist within RTÉ Radio and Television, Virgin Media Television, Newstalk, Today FM, TG4, and a growing number of independent production companies based primarily in Dublin, Cork and Galway. Senior professionals may move into commissioning, head of content roles, or establish their own independent production companies.
AI tools are beginning to assist broadcast producers with tasks such as automated transcription, content tagging, audience analytics and even draft scriptwriting, allowing teams to work more efficiently. Personalised content recommendation systems are reshaping how broadcasters think about scheduling and audience engagement, requiring producers to understand data-driven insights alongside creative instincts. However, the core creative, editorial and interpersonal dimensions of producing — building relationships with talent, making nuanced editorial judgements and managing teams — remain distinctly human skills that AI cannot replicate. Producers who embrace AI as a productivity tool while maintaining strong creative and journalistic standards are likely to have a competitive advantage.
